Story

Rudy had been driving all day, he was hot, and tired. He knew there was a truck stop coming up soon, and was looking forward to a cold drink and a slice of their homemade apple pie. Just a few hundred yards, but then he spotted something laying by the side of the road. He slowed down a little to get a better look, and as Rudy approached, he realised it was an animal.

He stopped his truck and got out to investigate. It was then he realised it was a dog. A scrawny, thin, sickly-looking dog. It raised it's his head slightly, and his eyes fixated upon Rudy's face. It was too weak to move, but still wary. Rudy squatted down and slowly reached his hand towards the dog. "Boy, you are in a state, aren't you? Let's see what we can do, alright? Don't bite me buddy - I'm gonna help you". It didn't appear to be injured, just weak from lack of food and water. Gently sliding his hands under the dog, Rudy managed to scoop him up and get him in the truck, on the passenger seat.

"Alright, let's get you home. Maria is gonna be so suprised!" Rudy forgot all about stopping to have a drink, and drove home, talking to the dog all the way, telling him about his wife Maria, his job, his home. It seemed like the dog was listening to everything, taking it all in. They arrived home, and Rudy carried the dog inside. "Maria! Maria! You'll never believe what I found! Come look!" Maria took one look and fell in love instantly. She made up a bed for him, and both her and Rudy nutured him for the next week. He was gaining weight, gaining his stength as the days went by. His personality was coming out, and they were both surprised at how playful he was!

His fur was getting fluffy, just like it should be. His ribs weren't showing like before - and he was thriving under their care. Rudy had decided the dog would be able to travel with him in his truck, when he was fully recovered. He was looking forward to taking him along to work with him. Maria had announced she had picked a name for him - Poncho. Rudy just nodded and smiled. He had no doubts Poncho was going to fill their lives with happiness and joy.
