One day, I'll make them all see.

I'll make them pay.

Emerald was running, running as fast as he could. But it seemed nearly impossible.

I'll never make it out alive! Emerald thought frantically. All this for a stupid green glowst--

His thoughts were interrupted by a humongous BOOM that sounded behind him. Dark matter was seemed to be flying from everywhere, obscuring Emerald's view.

Not that he had much of a view to begin with. For starters, it was around 1p.m., and the sun was beating down on him. That's never good for a Darkonite. Darkonites hate sunlight. They see much better in the dark. Not to mention that the stupid green glowstick that he was carrying was adding even more light into his vision.

Weaving left and right to avoid the Dark Matter, Emerald thought of what had happened the day before. He remembered his mother telling him that he needed to get a green glowstick.

"But not just any old green glowstick", he remembered his mother saying. "You need to get the green glowstick from Lonn"

You need the green glowstick from Lonn. Emerald inwardly mimicked his mother's words in a high pitched voice.

Being that his mother was an alchemist, and probably had the power to slip some suspicious elixirs into his drink, Emerald didn't really want to object to his mother's requests. No matter how much he hated his mother.

Of course, he regretted his passiveness at this current moment.

DAMMIT. I'd rather get turned into a Smilie Broccoli than be doing this!

Another thing that Darkonites hated. Broccoli. After all, it was a health food, and that meant that it was GOOD for you. And the smile in addition to the broccoli . . . let's not think about it.

BOOM. A stream of dark matter had exploded the rock three feet behind Emerald, causing him to fly fifteen feet forward.

Emerald was temporarily stunned, but when he finally had the strength to get up, he realized that he was not a few meters from the border. He could already see the darkness that was across emanating from Shadowglen.

YES. thought Emerald as he began to run again. If i could just get past to Shadowglen . . .

The thought pushed him forward.

He was only five feet from the border when yet another stream of dark matter caught his tail. Wincing in pain, Emerald staggered across the border and merged with the shadows.

Phew. thought Emerald, looking behind him. Lonn couldn't get him now. His power could only work in the Darkside.

But seriously, this wound is starting to sting. Better get to Shadow Lake soon.

And with that, Emerald began to run again. Shadow Lake was where Emerald and his mother lived. Yes. They lived IN the lake. For as long as Emerald could remember, he and his mom lived in a cave hidden within the gray depths of Shadow Lake. From a young age, Emerald had gotten used to the lake, although he still could not exactly call it his home. Whatever he did, Emerald couldn't detach himself from the sense of hatred and uneasiness that he felt while being in the cave.

When he finally reached the lake, Emerald paused, making sure to check for unexpected Subetans. Letting a wanderer find their cave would probably result in Emerald's feet turning into flippers or something of the like.

With a final check, Emerald plunged into the murky depths of Shadow Lake.

_______________

Now, as most underground caverns are, Emerald's home in Shadow Lake was dank. There wasn't much lighting, but Emerald could always find his way because of the luminescent bacteria that lived specifically at the base of his cavern.

Emerging from the murky depths of the lake, Emerald shook the water off of his fur and crept into the den. Looking around for his mother, Emerald could not help noting, as he always did, the mess in the cavern. Nevertheless, the padded to the 'dining area' and placed the green glowstick on the table.

"What took you so long?" demanded his mother, appearing from behind one of the many collapsed shelves. "If i had intended on starting my potion the moment you left yesterday, it would've been spoiled by now."

Emerald glared. " Do you know what i had to go through just to get this stupid thing?! A 'Thank you' would be pretty nice right about now"

"Are you kidding?" his mother smirked. " NORMAL Subetans take less than an hour to complete quests. But you? You take more than a day! What is wrong with you?"

"No, mom!" shouted Emerald, unable to contain his anger. He was sick of all those times she had pushed him around.

"What's wrong with YOU? You always criticize. You never see exactly how hard i work for the things that you request! Do you even realize how many times i could've died going on those quests for you? You never tell me to get things the NORMAL way! You never even ask if i got any injuries!"

" Oh, come now." his mother said calmly. "You know full well that the herbs required for healing are very precious."

More precious than your son? Emerald would have shouted these words as well, but something caught in his throat.

Without a second thought, Emerald ran towards the entrance of the cave, diving once again into Shadow Lake.
Away from that cave that where he felt he did not belong.
Away from the threat of being used as a test subject.
Away from the mother that always made him feel worthless.
