Nelchael’s mother was often called the Elf of Grantou by the citizens of the city in which the family lived. This nickname was bestowed upon her by one of her husband’s clients as a testament to her exceptional toy-making abilities. She was known throughout the city for her kites; with hand carved frames and brightly painted wings, children would flock to the small shop she set up in the front room of her family’s home.
The kites alone brought in enough customers to fill the store each weekend, but Nelchael’s favorite toys were always the plush dolls. Once as a birthday gift, his mother had made him a grey lion plush - trailing it behind him everywhere he went, it eventually got very worn and had to be repaired so many times that Nelchael's mother decided to make him a new one in the hopes that the old one would not require so much attention. (Though her plan failed, she realized that she actually quite liked making the dolls, and continued to make them from then on.)
His mother made every aspect of the dolls by hand, spinning the thread using wool gathered from their livestock and dyeing the fabric with natural colors she made herself. Nelchael loved to watch her – he would sit at her side for hours as the cluster of wool dwindled slowly down into a fine thread. To Nelchael, it didn’t matter what creature the doll was made into. He could feel his mother in the stitches; when he held the dolls in his arms, he could practically hear the songs she sang while weaving the fabric, and smell the dye as it seeped into the wool.
As a child, Nelchael could never understand why the beautiful dolls were always on the back shelf instead of on display in the front. It was many years later, when one of the dolls finally caught the attention of a customer, that he realized the reason. To him, the dolls personified his mother’s deft hands, sweeping gracefully across the loom, or rising and falling as she sewed the fabric into a recognizable shape. But to his mother, the dolls embodied the sleepy head of her son leaning against her leg as she spun the last of the wool, and the warmth she felt in Nelchael’s eyes as he watched her do so. The dolls were the representations of their time together; though mother and son rarely spoke during these hours, their love for each other was palpable in the room, and manifested itself in each and every stitch.
When the child who purchased the first doll exited the store with her new toy, Nelchael's mother watched with a bittersweet look on her face as the product of her labor was carried out the door, soaked in sweet and quiet hours spent together with her son. Not long after the child left, Nelchael approached his mother and asked if he could hold on to the dolls himself - to this day, they do not leave his side.
