Germany, ca. 1845
Rain fell softly on the deck of the ship. The sea rocked the ship. With its nose it broke every wave it met. There was only one creature that seemed afraid. “Wo ist er? Say, wo?” Herr Mencken was searching his last experiment that actually worked. A golden cage shimmered in the rain between wooden crates. “Here you are! I’ll take off this deck before you rust. Good staff is always hard to find.” On the cage the name of his experiment was engraved. ‘Hamburg’. An unusual name but it was Herr Mencken’s birthplace. The place he missed but couldn’t give him the future he wanted in his earlier years as a professor. A few days later...
It was finally released from its expensive cell. Common sounds of home greeted him. Older test pets were minding their own business in the immense study room. The mechanical hummingbird was flying through the house, methodically passing through each room. A brass cat was relaxing on the windowsill, not paying mind to the constant noise of machines working. But that one safe and cosy sound, unique from all others, that made the steamwork dog come out of its shelter. It was the sound of the professor inhaling from his pipe. Paw for paw, Hamburg made its first steps on German ground, in Hamburg.
Hamburg was always treated like Herr Mencken’s equal, his best friend. It was like that before the experiment was conducted, and it would continue into the future. The professor had been trying this procedure on many animals. Only a few succeeded, Hamburg being one of them. He finally was able to insert a brain and heart in a canine-like machine. It functioned just as efficiently as its flesh and blood counterpart, and could even be trained. World breaking news, to say the least. Mencken was invited to the inventors fair in his birthplace to show off his latest invention.
“Heute ist der Tag, junge!” The dog lifted its head before standing up. He was put back in its cage before leaving. A carriage was waiting outside the door with two large black horses. They pulled the experiment and professor through the city, to the fair. A lot of important people were present, as evident by their long black coats and high hats. They all were waiting in lines to get inside to view the 'mechanical dog.'
As money and pride does to those even with a good heart, Herr Mencken abandoned his experiments as he became famous, despite the creatures being the reason for his success. Months after arriving, the pets lay down in a dark corner of the room of their once-happy house. They needed someone to take care for them, someone to play with them. The professor was sitting at his desk, creating new plans for some important client, oblivious to his creation's misery. Hamburg was glaring at him. He had been doing such for days, without being noticed at all. Mencken finally looked up from his incomplete creation. Eye contact.
For the first time in days, Hamburg rose from the spot he had been occupying. Rusty gears gnashed as he moving forward, leaking his last bit of oil onto the ground as he aimed towards his owner. Mencken shoved away from his desk. “Hey, boy. Saying hello to me?” Hamburg remained silent, Mencken lighting a match for his pipe.
That was when Hamburg struck. Once his best friend, the mechanical canine latched onto the man's neck, bringing them both tumbling to the ground. The match fell, hitting the leaked oil, and the blaze began. The fire consumed all.
