It is said that my downfall began with the Culling of Stratholme. Uther most certainly made it out to be that way. But the term downfall is so... unappealing. I prefer to have it known as the first of my trials. After all, why else would Mal'Ganis show up, taunt me, and then leave with a cryptic message that we would meet in Northrend?

The second of my trials was reaching Northrend. I have to admit, it would not have been possible had I not had the assistance of Mauradin along the way. I almost failed, but the mercenaries in the area proved to be quite useful, and only Mauradin ever knew of my deception...

The third trial was the slaying of Mal'Ganis. Although finding Frostmourne was no easy feat, once again Mauradin proved his loyalty to me by fighting his way through Drak'Tharon Keep with his men and myself. When we finally reached the blade, he pleaded with me to turn and leave, and let the sword stay at rest as I found some other way to save my people. But I knew what had to be done. I knew that this was what would save my people, and that this would allow me to slay Mal'Ganis in the process. Unfortunately, Mauradin was lost during this trial. While Mal'Ganis was slain, and the Lich King was now gained as an ally, the dwarf did not manage to make it out with his life... But my new life was only beginning.

The next trial is the one that had me labelled as a monster. After wandering through the frozen wastes of Northrend on my own for some time, I finally returned home to Lordaeron. My people celebrated my return, as did my father. Their joy did not last long, however. After paying my respects to the King, and my father, I ran through him with Frostmourne, slaying him. I had passed the fifth trial, and out of it I earned my childhood friend, my noble steed, Invincible.

The sixth trial was reviving Kel'Thuzard. The necromancer was in bad shape, but another dread lord, this one named Tichondrius the Darkener, told me of a way that he could be revived. Setting out to retrieve the urn that would carry Kel'Thuzard's remains to the Sunwell, I found my seventh trial in the midst of the sixth.

Retrieving the urn was not the seventh trial. Slaying my childhood mentor was. Uther had received word of my intentions, and met me at the urn. He explained that the urn contained the remains of my father, in a final, desperate plea to turn me off of my new path. When I did not back down, he accused me of pissing on the remains of my father. Well... he did not manage to say much more than that. Like the previous trials, I passed this one as well.

Kel'Thuzad was revived after the fall of Quel'Thalas. The elves put up a fight, but not even their mighty Ranger-General Sylvanas Windrunner escaped from my might, and the might of the Scourge. The final step in the sixth trial had been passed.

Next, under the tutelage of Kel'Thuzad, we headed on to my eighth trial: the destruction of Dalaran. The Kirin Tor fought desperately to save their precious city, but it was for naught. My Scourge proved to be a stronger force than even that of Azeroth's strongest mages. However, once Kel'Thuzad finished summoning the demon lord, Archimonde, I was informed that the Lich King was done playing his role in the Legion's plan, and that meant that I was no longer the commander of the Scourge. Kel'Thuzad informed me that this was all in the Lich King's plan. I had passed the eighth trial.

The ninth trial involved the betrayal of Sylvanas against myself and the Lich King. The wicked banshee had managed to escape the control of the Lich King, and had sided with the Legion to betray us. Kel'Thuzad was able to divert her wicked scheme at the last moment, but while paralyzed by one of her arrows, I heard the cry of the Lich King. He told me to head to the Frozen Throne in Northrend. Leaving Kel'Thuzad in charge of Lordaeron, I headed off to Northrend to face my tenth trial.

Landing on Northrend's shore, I was instantly under attack by Kael'thas and his forces. The elves had come for their revenge for the act I had committed upon their kingdom. I was saved by Anub'arak, who later turned out to be the former king of Azjol-Nerub, the Nerubians' homeland. While reaching the Frozen Throne was my tenth trial, there was a side stop, in which Anub'arak and I took down Sapphiron, who was then raised into a frost wyrm, to fight for the Lich King.

The eleventh, and final trial, involved taking out Illidan. The traitorous demon had beaten me to the Frozen Throne, but only I was to continue onwards to it. The demon was made quick work of, and I slowly approached the throne. Walking up the stairs, the voices of everyone who I had known throughout my childhood, and my life, ran through my head, warning me away. But I knew what must be done. Reaching the throne, Ner'zhul, the Lich King, spoke to me. He told me to thrust my sword through the icy prison that housed his armor, and set him free. So I did. Picking up the helmet, I placed it on my head, and sealed my fate. Ner'zhul and I had become one entity. But I wasn't done yet.

My trials complete, I had only one thing left to do. Dreaming one night, I saw what mangled mess was left of my humanity, and Ner'zhul. After a moment of hesitation, I rid myself of the little humanity that remained, and Ner'zhul spoke to me, telling me that we were to be the rulers of Azeroth together. That did not sit quite well with me. So I had one last act before becoming the true Lich King. I had to consume Ner'zhul.

"No we. No one tells me what to do. I've got everything I need from you - now the power is mine and mine alone. Now there is only I. I am the Lich King. I am ready."

And so I did.
