The Dragon

The day the unicorn stumbled into his cave is one that the dragon remembers vividly, like a brand upon the memories of his mind.

The smell of blood awoke him and he went to his cave entrance with the intent of defending it from whatever idiotic thing had decided to bother him. The dragon was surprised to lumber up and find a small unicorn shivering at the cavern opening. Its white pelt was barely seen under the streaks of dark red blood that colored its flanks, and splashed up onto its belly and neck. Its horn had been broken in half and its mane was in bloodied knots. Even as it stood there, crimson splattered the ground beneath it.
"I'm sorry to intrude," it murmured, sides heaving as it struggled to breathe. "I didn't know this cave was occupied." The dragon didn't have a chance to respond before angry shouting invaded the silence. The unicorn skittered, glancing back and forth between the hateful words, and the dragon that stared down at it emotionlessly. "I..."
"Come forward," the dragon grumbled. It hesitated however as the voices raised, it limped over to the dragon's side. It made it to him just as a group of torch and sword wielding humans stumbled into the space. They blanched upon seeing the dragon, freezing immediately. "Leave." One brave--or perhaps foolish--man inched forward, his armor clanking as he trembled.
"We d-demand... you give us... the unicorn." The unicorn shuffled closer and the dragon squared his shoulders as he rose to his full height.
"Would you care to repeat that...?" The man's mouth moved, his Adam's apple bobbing as he swallowed roughly.
"W-we... need that unicorn. G-give it to us...!" He let the silence stretch before laughing, sharp teeth yellowed by age and blood flashing as his jaws opened wider, his laughter booming in the space.

"I thought I heard right! You dare demand something from me within my own home? Leave, before my mercy expires." The group looked at each other and back to the dragon, slowly lifting their blades towards him. Whatever they thought they could gain from the unicorn must have been immeasurable to face him so boldly. "Very well, then your choice to die is your own. I will not hold your blood on my claws." He breathed deep, veins of purple shooting up the ridges of his chest as his fire traveled upwards. As they rushed towards him with obnoxious yelling, the dragon unleashed a stream of purple flames. The humans screeched as they were engulfed, hitting the ground and rolling yet the dragon didn't let up and soon their shrieks turned to silence as their bodies melted under the intense heat. His jaws snapped shut with a clack and he sniffed disdainfully at the scorched ground, items that hadn't burned to ashes still smoldering as black husks. "I hate dirtying my entrance..." He turned to look down at the unicorn who stared at the scene with clear fear in its eyes. "Do you have a better form to take?"
"O-oh! I... yes... but not in this state..."
"Very well... come." The dragon began walking back towards his cavern abode, not really caring if the unicorn followed or not. However he soon heard the clicking of its hooves limping behind him. The dragon carefully led it through the maze of tunnels that led to what he considered the main room before gesturing at it with his tail. "Stay there." The unicorn blinked owlishly at him before nodding, the trembling in its body not having subsided since it arrived. He frowned at it then hurried to another set of rooms. While he was sure a unicorn couldn't do a thing to hurt him, he wouldn't take the chance by allowing it entrance into all of his rooms.

When he came back, the unicorn was laying on the ground with its legs tucked under it and head lowered on the floor. It lifted its head as he set down a package from his claws.
"If I am to treat you, I will take on another form. Would it bother you?"
"No, of course not, but you have done more than enough to help me," it protested.
"I won't have you bleed out on my floors after saving you from their blades." The unicorn nickered uncertainly yet said no more. Without any further protests, the dragon allowed his body to shift until he was that of a human. He stretched and rotated his limbs, uncaring of his nakedness as he went about to treat the creature. He was surprised that it was larger than he thought, at least a size or two larger than a horse. The white of the pelt he could see almost seemed to sparkle like freshly fallen snow. He huffed before setting to treating the uneven and ugly gashes that covered its body. One particular one on its flank gave him pause. "They weren't aiming to kill you." The unicorn's head tilted towards him. "These aren't deep enough, there's just many of them. What did they wish to acquire from you?"
"They seemed to have wanted my blood, and my horn. They were able to rope me while I slept and took some of what they wanted before I was able to break free. Apparently... it was not enough." The dragon snorted as he continued to wash away the blood and layer bandages across the wounds. Selfish humans, always thinking the mythical could save them. "May I ask... why you have these supplies?"
"I don't wish to be caught unprepared in the case I face foes who actually know a means to wound me. Most humans get one look at me and flee, making it easy to keep stock of goods when they leave their caravans to save their lives."
"I... see. Thank you." He frowned at its words and glanced over at it yet it had already returned its head to the floor.

They sank into silence and the dragon was grateful for it. It allowed him time to think about his next move considering the actions he had taken today. When he was finished he stepped away, carelessly wiping his bloody hands on the floor to free him of the crust that had dried. The unicorn lifted its head as he began to shift back into his original form.
"You are free to stay here until you are recovered."
"I don't want to intrude--"
"It is no concern to me. Do as you wish." The unicorn paused before lowering its head to the ground, its broken horn gleaming sadly in the torchlights that lined the slick walls.
"Thank you. I won't forget this kindness." The dragon gave it an odd look before gathering the supplies he had brought in.
"It was not kindness. You will owe me for this." The unicorn nodded shortly before its eyes closed.
"Of course, but I thank you all the same." He narrowed his eyes at it. Odd creature...

The unicorn's stay morphed from days into weeks, into months, and once it was nearing a year the dragon begrudgingly admitted to liking its presence. While its recovery was fast, its horn was not. Even after almost a year it had only managed to grow a few inches from the broken stub it had once been.
"To fully heal it," the unicorn said as it trotted beside him, "I will need to bathe in the waters of purity." The dragon scoffed as he looked down at it.
"That is a terrible name." The unicorn neighed a laugh, tossing its white mane happily.
"Perhaps to a fearsome creature as yourself, yet I like it. It is easy to remember!" They reached the entrance of his cave and the unicorn hesitated as it reached the edges, the sunlight spilling within causing its pearly pelt to sparkle like diamonds.
"It is there I must travel." The unicorn tilted its head to look up at him and the dragon sat on his haunches to return the gaze. "I am truly grateful for all that you've done for me. What is the payment that you request?" The dragon glanced away as he thought. After a moment or two he looked at the unicorn once more.
"At the present time, I cannot think of what I want in return. So, I will request you come back to me so that I may give you my repayment then." The unicorn seemed startled yet lowered its head in a nod.
"Very well. Once I am properly healed, I'll return to you." The unicorn started to turn yet the dragon got to his feet, claws scratching noisily on the rock beneath them.
"Wait, we never have traded names. I am Taelio. What is your name?" The unicorn tilted its head before a playful light glittered in its eyes.
"I shall share my name when I see you again!" it promised with a happy whinny before turning and galloping out of the cavern.

So the dragon has waited patiently for the return of the unicorn in which he could finally learn its name, and to reclaim his payment.
Taelio will wait for however long that it takes to meet his unicorn again, even if that means watching the world transform around him.
