Gunnar. A brave, bold warrior; interested in the Gestalt laws of motion perception (the brain is holistic, parallel, and analog, with self-organizing tendencies); general principle maintains that the eye sees objects in their entirety before perceiving their individual parts, suggesting "the whole is greater than the sum of its parts" when really "the whole is other than the sum of the parts"; biological motion; rigidity assumption that proximal stimuli can be perceived as rigid objects and are generally perceived as such. That is me me in a nutshell.

Oh, are you confused about Gestalt psychology? I assumed as much. (Even if one should not assume.)

Let me take you on the path of Gestalt psychology or gestaltism (everything has an -ism component, did not you know?) I will attempt to be brief even if the subject itself is not.

Originating from the minds of the Berlin School, the principle of Gestalt psychology is that the eye sees objects in their entirety before their individual parts. Most think this suggests the whole is greater as you can not be whole without parts; however, if you need parts to be whole, parts should not take second place. You need both parts and the whole: Unity. I am certainly better with both considering I would not be without them. I suppose this is why I was put together so carefully and concise, with serious concentration. You can not half-ass perfection.

As a steamwork pet, I find it fitting to engross myself in the practice of gestaltism. Besides, stimuli within an already complex serious of interactions will not only be difficult, it will be ridiculous, and I want everyone to know you will get through it. Daily. Hourly. And concerning myself with organization of the senses, I do not find this task as problematic. You should not have to, either, which is why I am enlightening you on this idea. I also simply enjoy illuminating others on the inaccuracy of structuralism. You can not analyze human society as a network of interrelations.. you can try, and waste time. I personally dislike wasted time, don not you think?

Again, this theory does not mean the whole is better than parts or vice versa, even if the falsely translated wide-spread quote suggests such. It means they are different. I personally like my senses and also my whole. Together. And with respect to the visual recognition of figures over lines, I will note once more that structural psychology is typically inaccurate. Gestalt theory is straightforward in that it permits the breakup of elements from the whole situation into what it really is.

A breakdown of the main principles, totality and psychology isomorphism:

Principle of Totality.. the conscious experience simultaneously taking into account both physical and mental aspects of the individual because the nature of the mind demands that each component be considered as part of a system of dynamic relationships. Without its parts, there is no ground for the whole. Hence, the concepts of part and whole are correlative.

From the medical perspective, the principle of totality would mean that "all the parts of the human body, as parts, are meant to exist and function for the good of the whole body, and are thus naturally subordinated to the good of the whole body." This can be debatable as this principle has been similarly used as a justification for mutilation. I certainly do not condone the illicit use of mutilation yet understand where one might pull this from. An example is that if something is detrimental to your whole, you get rid of it (which can be considered mutilation in certain circumstances).

Furthermore, this notion is analogous in a restricted sense while it can also transcendental or limited. One can find both physical and spiritual in the concept and there is not a correct answer to this as your whole is what you wish it to be. This is why this principle has some discrepancies amongst the community of its "true" definition. I suggest researching into it further, if interested, as I have already probably started to confuse you.

Regardless, the main notions on which this principle grounds itself are "the whole, the part, and their mutual relationships."

Principle of psychophysical isomorphism.. a correlation exists between conscious experience and cerebral activity.

Then constructed on the principles above, there are now the following methodological principles: Phenomenon experimental analysis and Biotic experiment.

Phenomenon experimental analysis.. any psychological research should take as a starting point phenomena and not be solely focused on sensory qualities.

Biotic experiment.. a need to conduct real experiments that sharply contrasted with and opposed classic laboratory experiments (eg. experimenting in natural situations, developed in real conditions, in which it would be possible to reproduce, with higher fidelity, what would be habitual for a subject).

The key principles of gestalt systems are emergence, reification, multistability and invariance. There are also laws of grouping: Law of Proximity, Law of Similarity, Law of Closure, Law of Symmetry, Law of Common Fate, Law of Continuity, Law of Good Gestalt, Law of Past Experience. I will refrain from explaining these in depth for your sake.

Gestalt psychology also implies that the mind understands external stimuli as whole rather than the sum of their parts and that it is important to think of problems as whole, even if there is harmony between the two. There is productive thinking and solving with insight as well as reproductive thinking and solving with experience to utilize in these problem instances.

Finally, I must state that the word Gestalt is used in modern German to mean the way a thing has been "placed" or "put together." It is the "essence or shape of an entity's complete form". There is no exact equivalent in English. In psychology the word is often interpreted as "pattern" or "configuration."

I apologize if I have given you a headache.
