The city was beginning to turn from its sleep and out of the half-darkness figures began to appear along the streets; some on foot, some in creaky carriages. They made their way to the bay, all with their nets or fishing rods, the wheels rattling on the cobbled road while the dawn strengthened.
And a long shadowy machine approached with a screech out of the gloom. In the light of dawn it was the colour of blood. Puffing hot steam, the machine shook itself as though it were alive.
The driver, a great and gaunt man, appeared to be unaware of the condition of the machine or of the danger to the conglomeration of persons who are in the stern.
He laid his feet resting lazily on the clutch and the brake until the machine stopped, in a clanking cacophony, in the middle of the harbor. Finally, when the smoke cleared, the man jumped out of the driver's seat landing at the side of the hissing car, where he stretched himself.“We got there!†he yelled facing at the dock waking up the seagulls.
The passengers, most part the old and worn, made their way to the sea trailing nets and fishing-lines.It was not clear why he did that trip every morning. He never wanted anything from that folk; nor did he fish. He remained close to the machine and lit an old pipe, watching the sun rising.
