I knew, from the moment I walked in the door of Dr. Cam’s AP Chem class, that he was special.
Mistrey Lunam, the notorious geek of the school with wild blond and blue hair that stuck up in ways that defied gravity and eyes that looked like stars behind his horned rimmed glasses. He always wore these gold goggles with multiple lenses on his forehead, yes, even when he was wearing his glasses. Don’t get me wrong here, I don’t judge books by their covers! It was just obvious he was a little strange. He was a foreign exchange student, having moved here from Atebus nine months earlier, starting school here at the end of our junior year. His parents were scientists or engineers… Something smart like that. They came down for business, Mistrey being forced along with them. No matter what people thought about that kid, no one could deny he was a total genius. He was a cheaters dream desk mate, really. It was rare that he ever got less that a perfect score on a test, especially when it came to science and math. I’ve heard he wants to work for Yun Enterprises eventually, when he gets to move back home. There’s not a doubt in my mind that he’ll make it. I mean, he’s the only one who’s ranked higher than me. It’s really too bad that no one wants to be his friend, that no one appreciates his intellect and what he could offer to the world. Makes me a little sad, you know?
So I decided to sit next to him, making me his lab partner for the year.
Little did I know how that one decision would change my life.
-------
I practically ran across the parking lot. Way to be late on the first early lab day, Sunday. Perfect way to start the year. Unfortunately, my alarm clock was unable to beep a second time when I slept through the first one after having stayed up waaaaaaay too late typing up a lab procedure the night before. Law of Conservation of Mass, a piece of cake. Not to mention that the faults of the equipment we had access to would make coming up with enough errors for the error analysis part of the final lab report easy. The door to the science hallway was easily flung open as I raced inside and found room 304 – the chemistry lab.
When I entered only a few students hadn’t arrived yet, many just putting on their safety goggles as if they had just walked in. Well, except for Mistrey. He had his gold goggles on and his regular glasses had taken over their usual spot on his forehead as he fussed over getting just one more tiny drop of a chemical into the graduated cylinder in front of him. I grabbed a pair of goggles as I walked over to him.
“Well, I guess I could have slept in this morning. You could do this by yourself,” I said jokingly, wincing as he jumped. Woops, hadn’t meant to sneak up on him…
“Um, hi. Sorry, I didn’t mean to… I mean… I guess I just didn’t think… wait for you…” he mumbled, standing up to face me.
He was a giant. I thought I was pretty tall, but he was taaaaaall. 6’4 at least, not including his gravity defying hair. But even that shock couldn’t stop me from laughing at his stuttering.
“I was kidding,” I laughed, wanting to break the ice. “So how can I help? I want to get through this quickly.”
“Uh, the copper needs to be weighed out and cleaned with steel wool,” he answered after a second.
“I’m on it!” I said cheerfully, starting to turn to the scales when I noticed some of the acid had gotten on the table. “Oh, and you spilt a little bit of the HNO3. Make sure to clean it up. We dun wanna kill anyone with an acid (especially some of those bio and environmental science guys who don’t know what they’re dealing with).”
Then I winked. A weird expression now that I think about it, really. But I did, it felt natural at the time, but I’m not sure he noticed. Probably for the best…
-------
My yard is my haven. I plant, I admire, I relax. After refilling the bird feeder on the back deck (and throwing out a couple extra seeds for the squirrels) I headed out to the hammock - my favorite study spot - with three textbooks under my arm. I was halfway through the photosynthesis chapter when I heard a car door. Even if I hadn't seen the crazy blond hair with blue streaks (I was still amazed that anyone could have such hair!), I would have known it was Mistrey because of the car. Who else on Subeta drives a car fueled by coal with two steam funnels sticking out of the back. I smiled as he made his way over. I wasn't sure if he was going to come over to study or not, I mean, it wasn't like he needed it. But I thought it would be fun, and the poor guy needs to socialize some...
He waved, "Nice house."
"Thanks," I answered, glancing at my pride and joy - the garden my mother and I slaved for years over. "It may not be big on the inside, but it has lots of room outside."
I smiled to myself as I reached down to change textbooks. Even his laptop was steamwork. This guy... He was certainly different.
"So where should we start?" he asked, his laptop making strange noises as the gears started moving.
I opened my textbook to the chapter labled 'Thermochemistry'. "How about entropy?"
"Sounds good to me," he responded.

I was walking to my locker before my AP Bio class when it happened: Castor Borches stopped to talk to me. Which isn’t really weird. He’s one of my friends, well, not a great friend, but a friend never the less. He was acting weird that day though. Fiddling with the sleeve of his letterman jacket and smiling like a total idiot.
“So, uh, do you want to go to the movies on Saturday?” he blurted out.
I thought he meant with other people at first, “Sure. Who’s coming?”
He shuffled awkwardly, and I can’t really blame him. “Uh, I meant as a date. Like, just you and me.”
I wanted to smack myself, but I figured that would just make things more awkward. A date? With the quarterback? How cliché… I had never thought Castor like that, but at that point I was pretty sure that I would totally destroy the poor guy’s confidence if I said no (and our football team really needed a win and I didn’t want to be responsible if that didn’t happen). So I said, “Sure.”
He grabbed my hand and kissed it, “Fantastic! Uh, dinner first?”
“Why not?” I answered, not sure how I was going to get out of this one.
“So can I pick you up at seven then?” Castor asked me, a foolishly giddy smile on his face.
“Yeah, that sounds good,” I answered, throwing the poor boy a bone.
“So it’s a date then!”
And then I saw Mistrey walking towards us, heading to his AP Physics class. Had he heard? Oh God, I hope not. From the way he was looking at me though, I’d guess he did… I really didn’t want him to. Really really really didn’t.
“Yes… It’s a date,” I answered, and then I watched Mistrey disappear into his classroom.
I didn’t hear a thing my Bio teacher said once I got to class. My mind was on other things.
-------
Saturday had to have been the worst date I’d ever experienced. Not that I had that many to compare it to. But still! Castor was nice, keeping up a conversation was easy… But at dinner he ate with his mouth open. Uhg. That is a pet peeve of mine. It is sooo gross. Then the movie was corny and Castor tried to pull the whole ‘I’m totally yawning and my arm happened to drape over your shoulder, we should make out now’ move… That didn’t fly well. Although I was too nice to decline when he said “We should do this again sometime!”, so instead I said “Yeah! Great!” That’ll be interesting…
So now I’m working on my chemistry problems all alone, which is a complete bore, since Mistrey cancelled on me. I wonder why… I hope he’s not mad at me or anything…
On Monday, Mistrey barely talked to me in chem or any of the other times we normally walk together now… So all in all, a pretty awful day.
I always stop at my locker on the way out to my car after school, and that day I found a little piece of paper sticking out of it. I slid it out from the crease of the locker door and read it quickly. It was only a few sentences…He doesn’t deserve you. If he hurts you, I think I might have to kill him… But it’s your decision. I’ll be there for you either way… because while I may not deserve you anymore than he does, I love you.
I looked around. This was a joke right? Or for someone else? And if not… Who wrote it?
-------
Three days passed in chemistry without Mistrey barely looking at me. Is he mad? Why?
And another thing, no clue yet about who put that note in my locker, and no sign of another one so far. It must have been some prank. There was no way someone really decided to confess their love for me in a little note, right? …Although that would be pretty romantic.
-------
Finally! Mistrey seems to be back to normal, cracking ridiculous jokes about third derivatives and making puns out of the names of the elements (”Want to hear a joke about Potassium? Yeah? K! Hahaha!”). I missed that sense of humor. It’s so ridiculous it makes me smile, and he makes the cutest face when he realizes that no one else gets it…
Owww. I just ran into the post in the doorway ‘cause I was caught up in my thoughts there… Did Mistrey really distract me that much? Luckily most people are heading out of the school already. Time to stop by my locker, hopefully my face isn’t too red so no one will notice.Just as I was about to open my locker, Castor leaned against the one beside mine.
“So… Haven’t really talked to you since Saturday…” he started awkwardly.
“Oh yeah, sorry. Lots of homework I guess. Time flies by.” Maybe if my hair fell in front of my face so I couldn’t see him he’d actually disappear…
“You have a mark on your forehead…” Castor brushed my hair away. Darn it. I bet he thought it was affectionate, but it really just ruined my theory. “What happened?”
So it did leave a mark. Things just aren’t going so well right now… “Yeah, fine. Just a bump. I should probably get home soon though…” I trailed off, hoping that I wouldn’t have to actually come up with a good reason for needing to leave. At least being slightly injured could get me some pity so he might leave me alone.
“Okay. Talk to you tomorrow though. Maybe we can hang out again?” he said, walking away backwards so he could still talk. A little part of me wanted him to trip so he wouldn’t think it made him look cooler.
“Maybe,” I answered, turning to my locker just as a little note fell out of it. Perhaps things aren’t going so badly today after all.
Are you going to see him again? You walking beside him gives him more status in this school than he deserves. You are beautiful and mysterious and popular. You and your friends practically rule this place, yet he is one of the first to date you. That is why he wants to ‘hang out’ with you, I bet… He doesn’t see what I see. You are the most magnificent person I know.
I looked around again, but like the first time no one was around. Except Mistrey seemed to be walking towards me. I kept the note in my hand, he could clearly see it…
“Do you want to go to the library after school Friday? You can show me the book you were talking about last week,” he asked. His eyes didn’t even meet mine let alone notice the note in my hand – he was too busy scratching out some phone number that was written on one of the lockers.
I wanted him to look at me. To give me a reaction. “I don’t know. I might be doing something with Castor…”
He glanced up at me for a second, I swear. But then he just continued his clean up of the locker and shrugged. “Alright. Just let me know. See you later.” And he left. Just like that. I don’t know why I thought it could have been him…
