There's one thing you can't help but think if you've watched Dean Ambrose coming up through the independent circuit all the way to headlining pay per view events at WWE. The character of Dean Ambrose might not be just a character.

Surviving what he often describes as a 'rough' upbringing in Cincinnati's East End, he's often alluded to parental problems, including drugs and other legal issues, and not having much money and living in public housing as a child.

Like his former Shield teammate Seth Rollins, Dean got into wrestling at the tender age of 17, though Dean actually quit high school before graduation to start training. He rose through the ranks of many wrestling associations, including the likes of Combat Zone Wrestling, Full Impact Pro Wrestling, Insanity Pro Wrestling, and Westside Extreme Wrestling, winning championship belts many times over along the way. Unlike his teammates however, Dean's journey through the independent circuit was much harder, and bloodier. He fought in the types of matches that many times saw him stumbling out of the ring covered nearly to the waist in his own blood, and the blood of his opponents, fighting in 'dog collar' matches, and barbwire matches, sustaining multiple injuries including nearly having his left nipple severed, which have left him scarred to this day.

Finally he joined FCW, the early incarnation of NXT. Here of course he would meet up with Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns, and give fans their first look at things to come. He would feud several times with Rollins, attempting to take away Seth's FCW Championship belt, but would prove unsuccessful. Finally, it seemed, Ambrose came to the decision that they were stronger together, than apart, and the Shield was formed.

It was as part of the Shield that Dean would get his first taste of WWE gold, earning the United States Championship belt and holding on to the title for a record breaking 351 days. It was Dean's quirky and sometimes crazy microphone style that would make fans think he was the leader, and there were times that tensions would rise, cracks would show within the Shield over the other two members wanting to have their say in things as well.

When Dean and teammate Roman were betrayed by Seth, Dean once again became embroiled in a very violent feud with Rollins that would see him curbstomped into loading skids, steel steps, and ultimately a pile of cinder blocks which resulted in him carried out of the arena. While away recovering from those injuries, Dean took time off to film his first role in a WWE production, Lockdown.

Though he hasn't yet regained a WWE title since the Shield split, fans know it's only a matter of time before the Lunatic Fringe claws, bites and brawls his way back to the top of the heap. If anyone's tough enough to do it, it's Dean Ambrose,
