Story

I still can’t decide if the cracking was from the snowy walls around me, threatening to cave in; or from ice crystals forming on my ears. Either way, it was terrifying. The avalanche had cut me and my brother, Nate, from our skiing group. Now we were trapped in a seven foot cave we had dug out against the side of the mountain.
I shuffled closer to the small fire Nate had managed to make using his fire starter and what twigs he could find within a few feet of the small cave entrance. It was barely enough to keep the chill away, but at least it was something.
Three days passed, and our tiny fire was long gone. We were hungrier than we ever thought we could possibly be, and colder too. Nate asked me several times to go out of the cave with him. He wouldn’t leave me there alone, in fear I wouldn’t be able to dig myself out if the snow walls caved in; but we needed to find something to eat. Despite the hunger gnawing at my stomach, and even up my throat, I wouldn’t leave. I knew there was something waiting for us outside…something evil. I had seen the shadows against the white walls, heard the moaning that Nate had credited to the wind.
He couldn’t wait for me forever. On the third evening, just before sunset, he went out alone. And that was the last time I saw him…at least, as himself.
I waited alone for what seemed like days, but the sun never rose so I know it was only a few hours. Finally, just when I had convinced myself he was gone, something rustled outside. It wasn’t the shadow, I could tell by the silence. There was only the crunch of snow as footsteps approached. Thinking it was Nate, I almost flung myself right into the white wolf.
When I realized it was not Nate, I fell backwards, moving against the wall behind me. The wolf approached, completely silent now, white eyes piercing into me as it neared. All I could do was squeak my brother’s name as I prepared for the pain of being eaten.
But there were no teeth or claws; only a small thud at my feet. I opened my eyes and saw a white rabbit on the ground. Its eyes were still opened, but it was lifeless. Its collar was stained with red. When I looked back up, there was not a wolf, but instead a man.
He was tall but thin, with the most wonderful white beard I could imagine. It was not whiskery or dirty, but pure white as soft as down. His skin was a shade of blue and sparkling like ice. His white robes flowed like a northern wind behind him as he moved to the center of the cave. He waved his hand over the floor and a crackling fire came to life from the tiny burnt out pile of sticks. “You needn’t be afraid, Pim.” His voice split through the air like ice, yet there was warmth behind it. It made me not care who he was or how he knew my name. I knew I was safe.
He took the rabbit and started to prepare it over the fire. Then the moaning returned. The shadows danced on the white walls, and even the fire seemed to hide a little at the approach of whatever was outside. The man swiftly pulled me behind him as my brother ducked into the cavern.
I was so happy to see him! Overjoyed! I thought for sure he was dead. I leapedtowards him, but the man stopped me. “Leave her be, Demon! I found her first!”
I struggled against his hands. That was no demon that was my brother! And I wanted more than anything to sink into his arms. That is…until he spoke. “Come on Pim. I found food.” His voice was not the innocent voice of a boy. It was evil and whispering, and sent a thousand chills down my spine at once.
I no longer struggled against the white man, but now gladly hid behind him. “Nathan, what’s wrong with you?”
The man put his hand on my shoulder, and smiled down at me. “Pim, that is not your brother. He’s somewhere inside of that thing, fighting to get out, to get back to you. But what you see is only a shell…a shell now possessed by a demon called Windigo.” I only stared at him, or at what used to be him.
“Fine.” The demon hissed. “Since you’ve ruined all of the fun, Father Winter, she can see who I really am.” Darkness engulfed the body that once belonged to Nate. His arms and legs became nothing but a rolling mass of thick blackness. Yet his face remained. His eyes and cheeks were sunken in and his face was dull, but it was still unmistakably my brother’s face. The dark creature rose up taller than my father, standing at the same height as the white man. I was now on the verge of tears. What was that thing, besides evil?
“You can’t fight for him forever.” His whispering voice slithered throughout the cave. He was staring at the man he called ‘Father Winter’, but I knew his words were also meant for me. “Soon enough, he’ll give up and die. And his flesh will be mine to devour.”
I stepped towards him, reaching out and gently touching the face that I once new. My tiny fingers traced his cheekbones which had never been that prominent before. “Don’t give up, Nathan. I’ll find a way to free you.” The demon hissed at me and disappeared from the cave, taking with it the fire which had still been burning.
The white man relaxed his grip on my shoulder and returned to the smoldering wood, easily lighting it again with a wave of his hand. “Pim, I have a question for you.” I took a seat next to him, tears still welling in my eyes. “Getting your brother back is not going to be an easy task.” I wiped the wet from my eyes with the back of my sleeve and looked at him, trying to muster the best determined face I could.
He looked down, tearing a piece of cooked rabbit and handing it to me. “But, if you really want to hunt down the Windigo, I will help you.”
I devoured the meat quickly, too hungry to savor the flavor. “I do. Even if I die trying, I want to free my brother.” He handed me more meat and I ate, filling the void which had gnawed on my stomach for days. When the rabbit was gone, he smiled and gave a subtle nod.
“Let’s go then.” A flurry of snow billowed up around him and when it settled, the white wolf stood in his place. So I hadn’t imagined it! I climbed onto his back, now trusting this hunter fully; and he darted from the cave, leaving our fire to burn itself out. We were going to save my brother!
