Rufus Shinra isn’t exactly as bad a guy as he sometimes seems to be. He’s greedy, often ruthless, and occasionally a little too fond of skullduggery for its own sake, but ultimately he can be relied upon to do the right thing, when it’s provably in his own interest.

Rufus grew up in the small mountain town of Nibelheim, living out his youth in the Shinra Mansion at the outskirts of town where his fathers first business, the Shinra Manufacturing Works, was based. His father, the president of Shinra Manufacturing Works, was the object of Rufus' hatred, especially after the separation of him and his mother.

As the Shinra Company grew, the president began taking on larger projects and eventually the time came to realize his dream of building a massive city to base his empire out of and visualize the immense prosperity that the company was gaining at a rapid pace. At age 13, Rufus was moved from Nibelheim to the newly under construction city of Midgar. At the age of 15, he was named Vice President of the Shinra Company and wasted no time in attempting to influence the company with his own ideals, which conflict with those of the President.

By exploiting the planet’s Mako energy to generate usable power and making a fortune in the process, he soon became sole owner of the company. For a time, he brutally suppressed opposition to his company’s tactics, employing a squad of hatchet-men called the Turks to silence any protests, particularly those made by the AVALANCHE terrorist group. Eventually, though, when it became clear that total destruction was threatening the world, Shinra turned the resources of his company toward quelling Sephiroth and some of the havoc he attempted to wreak. His enormous “Sister Ray” cannon was able to defeat a pair of the gigantic Weapon monsters, racking up a pretty respectable kill score before it was eventually destroyed.

After Sephiroth’s defeat, Shinra faded into semi-retirement, confined to a wheelchair by the disease known as Geostigma. He retained considerable respect for his old foe Cloud Strife, though, and called upon him again when a new crisis threatened the world.
