Tub is a regular hedgehog visitor in my garden. We named him Tub because he was obviously quite well fed in our neighbourhood. As a hedgehog picks its way through the hedges it emits piglike grunts - thus, the name hedgehog. They are a gardener's friend, as they eat beetles, caterpillars, worms and other insect pests that can destroy plants. They usually sleep curled up in a prickly ball during the day and search for food at night.

If you would like to encourage hedgehogs to visit your garden, leave a couple of areas of your garden wild, with piles of leaves, logs or compost. These are an attractive nest as well as a home for the invertebrates that hedgehogs like to eat. You could leave some fresh water in a shallow bowl, and food for your hedgehog visitors such as tinned dog or cat food and cat biscuits or crushed dog biscuits. Never give milk to hedgehogs as it can cause diarrhoea.

Hedgehogs spend much of their life asleep, hibernating through the winter (typically from late December until late March) in a nest made from fallen leaves. Their spines are hollow and made of keratin (like your fingernails). Their young are called urchins, and a female hedgehog can have a litter of between 4 and 6 babies, but can have as many as 10! The urchins are born after a 35 day gestation period, the male hedgehog takes no part in rearing them. As soon as they are born, the spines, which are white initially, start to come through. Hedgehogs only have one litter a year. The urchins open their eyes and ears at about 14 days and their teeth start to come through after 21 days. After 8 weeks they are ready to become independent.
