I hear a cry to my left; soft and sweet. Turning, I spot a cat, dark as night. It looks at me with two big olive eyes, unblinking.
"You can see me?" I ask, crouching to the ground. The cat saunters to me and brushes its head against my palm. I stroke down its length. It's tail twirls around my hand playfully, and I feel something odd. The tail seemed to split in two.
My hand flies up. "Nekomata ," I gasp. "Can’t be." The false cat stretches up on its hind legs and pats the apple still enclosed in my other hand. It looks at me.
"Nya!"
"Was this yours?" It blinks. I sit down, and it crawls onto my lap, purring. "Ah, you are so cute," I say. "Shall I call you something?" It is very little, considering. Nekomatas are known to be large. "How about Chisana-neko: little cat?"
"Nya!"
I sigh. "I need to find my family." The little thing leaps off me, running forward. It stops, looking back, blinking. "Do you know the way?" It blinks then disappears down an alley.
"Wait!" I yell, chasing after it. "Neko! Wait!"
