"Look over there! On that branch! It's a Snake!" I hear that on a daily basis, but I'm not really a snake. I'm technically larvae or a caterpillar that will one day turn into a rather large brown moth. By the way, that snake head you see, that's actually my butt. Yup you're scared of my butt. Lovely how nature works, no?
My scientific name is Hemeroplanes triptolemus, a mouthful I know. My species live primarily in Central America and the northern parts of Southern America. We are known as the infamous snake caterpillars, dazzling humans with our natural snake mimicry abilities. We can flare up our butts and pull in our stubby little legs to make ourselves look like snakes. To make it look more authentic when predators are around we even scooch our butts to make it seem like a strike attack! We are blessed in that way. While I fake lunge at others, I am happily munching away on leaves.
By my green coloring, you can tell I am a younger caterpillar. The browner I get the closer I am to making my silk cocoon and turning into a shiny red/black pupae. About three weeks later I will turn into a beautiful scaly moth. I'll have up to a month to engorge myself on nectar and try to find some females. Then as like any other living creature I must pass on my genetics and eventually die. A short but well fulfilling life I soon hope to live out.
