Diaphonization is a process of rendering the skin of a specimen transluscent and staining the bones and cartilage with colored dyes, usually alizarin red and alcian blue.Also known as "clearing and staining", animal specimens flesh become transparent while the rich reds, purples, and blues highlight their skeletal system. This has helped us with the understanding of animals mobility, their stages of development, and even the chance to observe smaller specimens that are more fragile.
Even though scientists have been using diaphonization techniques for decades, it has become more uncommon in the field due to advancements in imaging technology.Fortunately, artists have also taken up the practice.
