Conceal, don't feel; don't let them know.
Everyone seems to know my story.
But there's one story that hasn't been told.
At a young age I was hidden away, kept from society, from my own sister, and all in the name of "protection". Protection from myself, from hurting others. I was locked in a room where the only company was the snow flurries that burst from my whole being.
Being alone is something I learned to become accustomed to. Day after day, month after month, year after year. Just me and my snow flurries for the longest time until one night I awoke to ice spikes on the ceiling. I sat up and blinked, hoping I was seeing things when I noticed the rest of the room seemed to be having a blizzard.
I left my room as quickly as possible and went to my parents, ice in my wake. I explained what happened, that it was getting worse. I was given gloves in the hopes that they would help conceal my power and it worked for many months but as I got older, my power started growing stronger and controlling it became more difficult every day.
When I was 18, my parents left on a Voyage and never returned. Anna tried her best to get me to open up, to come out but I couldn't. I could't control my power at that point. I knew it was connected with my emotions but controlling my emotions at that time was impossible.
Let it go, let it go.
Can't hold it back anymore.
By the time Coronation Day came to be, I was a mess of exposed nerves. I had been alone for so long, facing the people of the kingdom I would rule seemed like an impossible feat. I didn't know how to face the people of my kingdom, face my sister, after so many years in solitude in which I let my fear rule me.
But somehow I managed. The next thing I knew, I was crowned, the ceremony was over and the celebrations began.
You know what happens next; my sister and I fight, I create a massive winter storm that settles over the kingdom as I flee. Running away from everything like I always did. I didn't know where I was going and I didn't care as long as I was away. I wanted to be alone, back in solitude where I couldn't hurt anyone.
And that's when I met him.
Up here in the cold, thin air,
I finally can breathe.
By met I mean slammed into him while I wasn't looking were I was going. I fell to the ground from the impact but recovered quickly enough that I blasted him with ice crystals.
I look back now and I realize it was shock than ran through me when he blasted me right back with my own magic.
I held my hands in front of me and looked at this stranger who appeared before me seemingly out of nowhere. He looked to be no older than myself, tall and lean with white hair and his eyes an icy blue. He was wearing a blue sweater of some kind with what looked like a hood attached to it, tan pants and was holding his staff in a defensive manner.
And he was barefoot.
"Who are you?" I demanded, not taking my eyes off his.
"Who am I? Who are you?" He retorted.
I blinked in surprise and relaxed my pose subtly. "Who I am is none of your concern," I replied.
I saw him relax his pose as well while still remaining defensive. "What are you, some kind of Ice Princess in hiding?" He asked raising an eyebrow.
"No!" I shouted without thinking. "I-I-I mean-"
"Right. Whats with the tiara and the blast of ice you threw my way then?" He spun his staff over his shoulder and then leaned on the nearest tree perfectly at ease. I realized I was still on the defensive so I put my hands down slowly and crossed them over my chest.
"That's not your concern. I shouldn't be here," I said and walked around the stranger, head down and heading uphill.
"Hey wait-"; He started.
"Leave me alone," I said, cutting him off. I slammed into him again as he appeared in front of me. He caught my arm before I fell back again.
"I've never met anyone else who has power of ice like I do," he said, smiling in a kind manner. "At least tell me your name?"
I could sense he didn't mean me any harm but I stepped back all the same when he removed his hand from my arm. "I'm Elsa."
"Elsa," he said, his smile getting bigger. "Pleasure to meet you, Elsa. Jack Frost, at your service," he made a small bow then twirled his staff again. This time, it hit a tree and the tree began to freeze. From bottom to top, frost climbed up the pine. I stepped back in alarm, hugging my arms around my waist.
"Wh-what are you?" I asked, unsure of what to think.
"I'm a Guardian," he replied, a hint of pride in his voice.
"A guardian? Of what?"
"Of all the children in the world,"; he said, spreading his arms around. "Of their hopes, their dreams, their imaginations."
"Why are you here?" I asked, standing a little taller.
"Uh, well, I was messing with one of Norths snow globes and it led me here," he had a look of humour on his face when he spoke of this, like it was an everyday thing that people show up in places via a snow globe. He put his staff back over his shoulder and his hand in his pocket. "So where you headed in such a hurry?"
"Away," I replied as I started walking again. He caught up with me and met my stride.
"Away. Yeah that covers just about anything, Princess," he said walking backwards. As charming as he seemed to be he was starting to get on my nerves.
"I'm not going anywhere specific, just away," I said "And don't call me princess!"
"Sure, Princess, whatever you say. But I'm curious what you're running away from?" He put his staff in front of me to stop me. "I mean, that is what you're doing isn't it? Running away."
"I glared and him and ice started forming on the fingertips of my glove-less hand. "What business is it of yours? I don't know you and owe you nothing. Now get that stick out of my way before I move it for you."
;We stared at each other. Well, I glared he just kept looking at me with those icy blue eyes of his and something seemed to pass between us because he removed the staff blocking my path.
"You sure you don't wanna talk about it princess? You seem really wound up and -"
"Do I look like I want to talk about it?" I demanded cutting him off. "Why can't you leave me alone?"
"I've been told I'm persistent, I don't see it as a bad quality to have," he replied with a smirk on his face that annoyed me further. I walked around him again, intent on leaving him behind this time. "Also, you're in pain and I can see that. No one should have to deal with pain alone."
That stopped me in my tracks. I wasn't expecting him to notice, I thought I was masking myself skillfully like I had my entire life but apparently it didn't work on him. I turned to look at him and sighed. "How-how can you tell?"
He walked towards me. "I know a little something about pain, I can see it in others and yours speaks volumes. So whatdya say, princess? Shall we?" He held his arm out for me to put mine through and I couldn't help but smile.
"Its Queen, actually. Not princess, not anymore," I told him, wrapping my arms around my waist. "And I don't do well with touching."
"Queen? Didn't see that coming," he confided. "No touching then, how about flying?" He began to float with the wind.
I stepped back and gasped. "How are you doing that?" Excitement in my voice as he began to circle around me. I could feel the wind on my face as snowflakes gathered in the air.
"You don't fly?" he asked, surprise in his question. "Huh, maybe we can fix that."
He took my glove-less hand and the wind swirled around me as I floated in midair. I had never felt anything as exhilarating in my life before and didn't know what to say. We started moving up, past the tree tops into the clouds. I put my hand out and touched the clouds as we passed through them. Jack began to laugh which became infectious; I began to laugh too. This was the most free I had ever felt before and I didn't want it to end.
When we reached the top of the mountain, he set us down. I realized I was out of breath and there were tears on my cheeks. I turned away and swiped them away with and edge of my cloak.
"I didn't freeze you," I said, looking at the hand that had held mine.
He looked down as well and smirked. "No, you sure didn't. You're controlling it, your fear," he said.
I realized he was right. This was the longest I'd gone without being afraid for longer than I could remember. I didn't understand what was going on with my emotions, how could I go from scared and angry to light and happy? I began to breathe faster as I remembered what it was that I was running away from and snow started falling around me. I looked at my hands seeing the ice forming on my un-gloved hand and not being able to stop it.
Jack saw the struggle and floated closer to me. "Elsa, its okay, just breathe. Can you do that for me?" He asked taking his hand tilting my head up so he could look into my eyes. "Breathe. You're perfectly safe, nothing is going to happen to you."
I took a step back from him. "I shouldn't be here, I can't be here," I began to tremble as I kept walking backwards. "Just leave me alone and go before I hurt you." I turned and began to run as fast as I could.
"Elsa, come back!" he called after me but I kept running. I only stopped when I tripped over a log and saw Jack riding the wind to find me.
I know I left a life behind,
But I'm too relieved to grieve!
Around this time is when you see me building my ice fortress and beginning to let myself go and be who I am. Jack had helped me learn that it was okay. I just didn't know I could do it in the company of others yet.
Being alone was wonderful for me. I could breathe and not be afraid of my shadow. I could make my snow flurries without the lump of fear in my chest. Things were good for me until Anna found me and, well, you know the rest. I could go into the long details of everything that happened after my sister found me but I won't. You know the story so I'll skip to the end.
After everything that happened, as happy as I was, my thoughts often drifted to the boy in the woods who could fly with the wind. He helped me change my life and I wanted to thank him but didn't think I'd see him again.
One night, not long after I came back to the palace, there was a tap on my window. I woke up to see the shape of a snowflake made out of frost on my window pane.
"Jack Frost!" I gasped and jumped out of bed to open the window and there he was, with that smirk on his face and laughter in his eyes, his stick over his shoulder.
"Hello, Princess," he said. "I heard you came home." He leaned against the balcony and waited.
"I'm glad to see you, Jack. I wasn't sure if I ever would again."
"I'm always here, Elsa. As long as you believe in me," He said, smiling broader.
I walked to him and wrapped my arms around him. "I will always believe in you, Jack," I said.
"And I will always believe in you, Elsa," he replied, returning my hug. "Actually, I'm here to give you a gift," he told me as we broke apart.
"A gift? I don't understand," I said, my eyebrows furrowing."I haven't done anything to deserve a gift."
"On the contrary you've done a lot. You not only defeated the storm inside you but you learned to control it which is a huge thing I might add. You learned to believe in yourself and to love and let yourself be loved in return, by your sister and by your people," He twirled his stick in his hand. "I spoke of you to the Man in the Moon, asked him if you could be a guardian as well but the only answer I got was a feather that drifted from the sky. And I understood."
";A feather? Understood what?" I asked, completely confused by now.
He took my hand and led me to he balcony that overlooked the kingdom, my kingdom. "You're already a Guardian, Elsa. You guard your city and keep it safe,. You protect your people, you guard their hopes and their dreams. You listen to their needs and help them in any way you can. You love your people and will do whatever it takes to keep them safe and that is the greatest gift you could give them.
And I have one more for you."
He floated above me then circled around me, swirling frost in the air as he did so. "Will you, Elsa of Aredelle, vow to watch over the people of your kingdom? To guard them with your life, their hopes, their wishes and their dreams, for they are all that you have, all that you are, and all that you will ever be?"
"I will," I said as the frost got thicker. I could feel something changing inside me, something growing. But I wasn't afraid of it; I was ready.
"Then from now and forevermore, you are a Guardian, Elsa."
Jack stopped spinning around me and touched his staff to the middle of my shoulder blades and suddenly the feeling that was growing inside me burst through. In its place were the most beautiful white feathered wings I had ever seen. They glistened in the moonlight under a sheer layer of frost and were whiter than fresh fallen snow. I watched them lost in wonder, not trusting myself to speak. Now I understood why the Man in the Moon sent Jack a feather; it was the greatest gift he could give.
I looked at Jack, my eyes stinging. "I don't know what to say," I told him. "Thank you doesn't seem to be enough."
Jack spun his staff and rested it on his shoulder. "There is no need, Elsa," he smirked and held out his hand. "Now, are you ready to fly?"
I looked at his hand and taking it, smiled. "Yes," I said. "I'm ready."
And as we flew over Arendelle, both of us laughing and feeling alive, I knew I would be ready for whatever came next.
Let it go, let it go!
And I'll rise like the break of dawn!
