There was nothing extraordinary about the boy's room. The bed sported Buzz Lightyear bedsheets that were always rumpled. Plastic soldiers and Legoes littered the floor, threatening the safety of his mother's ankles when she came to collect his laundry. Below the window with faded blue curtains was a shelf littered with scraps of wood.
It was an ordinary shelf, sanded and stained to a glossy smoothness. The boy's father called it the Shelf of Crafting Rejects. The boy's father was really kind of a jerk.
Woodcraft occupied the place of honor in the very center. To one side was a wooden airplane with one wing. The other snapped off when the boy tried to fly, happily ignoring the warning on the box that he couldn't read. He hadn't gotten around to fixing it yet. To the other side was Blocko, a bright orange mismatch of Legoes that Woodcraft had taped together while the boy was at school. The boy was nice enough to draw a jack-o-lantern face so Wood would have someone to talk to when he was away.
The boy had begged for a t-rex crafting kit for Christmas. All the stores were sold out so his mother wrote to his Gran in Chicago. She sent over the raptor kit instead. His father said "Be grateful it's not one of her godawful pairs of socks." He held up a pair knitted with pink kitty faces and made a face. Jerk.
Wood raised a puny arm to address Blocko. A section of his ribs had been cut out by inexperieced fingers that was equally clumsy with a glue bottle. The undersized segment popped free, clattering to the surface of the shelf. Wood picked it up with an annoyed clack of his jaw and popped it back into place.
The boy kept offering to glue them properly now that his hand-eye coordination was better but Wood refused. He hates the smell of wood glue. Don't even get him started on its disgusting, slimy texture that dries to a thin layer like human skin. Yuck! Besides, tape is so superior. Just look at how well Blocko was holding together. (The boy didn't have the heart to tell him that he had to replace Blocko's tape about twice a week.)
Wood tried again. It took him three tries to raise his arm in such a way that he did not need to reassemble himself.
"You just watch, Blocko. I'm going to make something amazing!"
The boy was not allowed to use a crafting knife but his mother had no objections to Wood using it to help him. She secretly hoped he would slice himself in half one of these days. She found her son's talking wooden dino model downright creepy. She was kind of a jerk too.
Poor boy.
"No peeking, Blocko! I want this to be a surprise!" Wood failed to take into account the gaps in his frame. Blocko would have no difficulty making out the forming shape, if his eyes actually worked.
"Isn't it just the coolest thing ever, Blocko? I made you a sister!"
The boy complained for weeks about the Barbie included in his Kid's Meal by mistake. He insisted he had no idea how Barbie ended up under the tires of the family minivan. When his father took the toy to throw it in the trash, the boy had secretly salvaged the undamaged head.
There were always spare scraps of wood lying around on the shelf. These made the crude arms and legs that jutted out from a fat red Mega Block. Barbie's head was taped precariously to the top.
The boy almost busted a lung he laughed so hard. Wood took no offense. He never did. "Her name is Blockette. Isn't she just the coolest thing ever?"

Woodcraft means a lot to me, I always had a set of wooden dinosaur skeletons growing up. Used to play with them and make Lego worlds and things for them. I had a crazy imaginative mind back then and just hope that in a weird sense this pet can be some sort of cute and innocent tribute to me as a kid.
Woodcraft's character is just always a happy go lucky one. He may not be the sharpest tool in the shed but he's a thinker and is always there to help! He's a good friend whenever you might need him. He strongly dislikes glues and is passionate about his love for tape.
