“Good Morning Richmond, Vermont! This is Penelope Ashville with HRR, Hard Rock Richmond, and it’s 7 A.M. and about that time for a brief weather report. I say brief, because when is it ever different this time of year? Haha... Anyway, it looks like it’s gonna be 72°F with winds at 10 mph going south and 73% of pure, thick Humidity. Chance of rain is 83% with a total cloud coverage – “

Penelope was cut off with a harsh slam from the tattooed hand of Damany Galaxia. The tentacle that curved around her slim wrist, over the top of her hand and wound up her arm connected to a bright magenta squid that spread across her chest and partially down her front. All she needed to hear was that it should more than likely rain, that was enough to make her feel better. Within minutes of the alarm being shut off two young girls about the age of twelve came bounding through her bedroom door with no regard to what Damany was doing prior.

It was obvious the twins were able to express their personalities like their adopted older sister, because like Damany they had brightly colored hair. Amethyst had deep purple locks that matched her name and Wallflower had colored hers to be a bright teal, but they had matching hairstyles that were cut at the shoulder with the sides pulled up and pinned in large ribbon bows that was in the color of the other twin’s hair. It had been Damany’s idea for the twins and their recent hair appointment to choose their colors and she couldn’t have been more impressed with herself at how cute they were together. The girls jumped on either side of Damany and ignored the gruntss that came from underneath the bubblegum pink mess of hair.

“Oh, my little angels,” Her tone was sarcastic but playful, “What mischief shall we get into today, on this most predicted gloomiest of Saturdays?” Although most her face was hidden by her hair, the smirk she was making was clear to the twins. Damany pushed herself up to sit against the headboard of her bed and wrestled her hair into a mess of a bun on the top of her head. Twelve years ago, Damany had been adopted by a couple from Richmond, Vermont when she was ten years old. It had been the family she had dreamt of and shortly after the family grew by two when the twins were born. She had fit in so perfectly with this family it was like finally finding the rest of her puzzle. Everything was perfect until shortly after the rainy season started, both Damany’s adopted parents passed away. Since then, Amethyst and Wallflower had been in her care in their parent’s old home.

“I was thinking you could take us down to that guys house in town by your work and we can pick out a puppy.” Amethyst folded her arms and did her best at hiding the excitement in her voice. It was obvious a decision was made between the girls that Amethyst was to be the one putting her foot down on finally getting the animal, Wallflower was so overcome by giggles she could barely speak.

Damany had seen this coming. She had set what she thought to be hard goals for nine-year-old kids and the girls had beaten every one of them, forcing Damany to keep her word on allowing them to get a dog. A few weeks prior, it became clear that she was going to have to make good on her promise, so she had set out and spoken to a few dog shelters and breeders in the area. The twins had become so excited between themselves it wasn’t hard to pick up on the type of dog they had in mind and it was equally easy finding the right man with the right pup. She raised and eyebrow and looked each girl in the eye and they returned it with their matching stone-grey eyes. “Is that what you were thinking? What about you Flower?” Damany smiled as teal hair flopped back and forth in an enthusiastic head nod. “Well, I suppose I have to hold good on my promise.”

The twins launched themselves into the air in screams of victory and happiness and rushed off to their rooms to get dressed and wait for Damany to be ready herself. Before the girls had even reached the kitchen Damany’s phone began to ring with the tone that indicated the Café. She closed her eyes and let her head fall back on her pillow and hoped for a few precious seconds that maybe the café was calling for some mundane reason, but the sound of the Death Star ringtone she had picked out told her that is was probably David calling out again and she was the only one to cover because she worked with a group of kids. It took everything she had to force her hand to pick up the cell phone and answer it. The conversation proceeded exactly how she had imagined it, just a bit more extreme which basically guaranteed that she had to come into the café until Stacy could get there after her college class was over in 5 hours. Another predicted conversation played in her mind, this time between her and the twins.

In the same movement, Damany got out of bed and began dressing in her work uniform, “Amy! Flower!” She was just lacing up her shoes when the girls came into the room, Amy's mouth full of toast and Flower sipping on a glass of juice. Both faces fell when they saw Damany dressed for work.

“You said you were off today…” Flower’s voice was soft and barely audible.

“You said we could get a puppy today!” Amethyst’s tone held the pain only a child’s voice could hold in times of disappointment – it crushed Damany.

“I know, that’s still happening. I only got called in to work for a few hours. I’ll be back home before 3pm and I’ll call the guy with the puppies to let him know we will be by later instead of this afternoon.” She was almost pleading with the girls to not be upset and it was hard to tell if it was working yet or not. “I wont even change when I get home, I’ll pick you guys up and then we will go, ok?”

Ignoring her own personal need of shower and clean clothes after work seemed to have done the trick and the smiles reappeared on the twin’s faces. As always, Damany ran through the ritual of being home alone for a few hours, kissed them both on the forehead and made no rush whatsoever to get into her car and head to the café.

By the time Damany got to the café and clocked in her mood had diminished considerably. Sure, it was somewhat sad David had finally succumbed to his addictions and was currently in the hospital, but it was hard to feel bad for the guy when she had been covering his shifts and overall work ethic the last seven months without even a thank you. Instead, the café was quick to call her first to come in when he was supposed to be at his position ‘thirty minutes ago and he was working the mid shift and it’s the usual busiest day of the week…’ She was positive it had gotten to the point they were just relying on the fact that she was in constant need of money and was the only true reliable employee in the entire shop besides Stacy, and her only thing was she was always in school.

Damany was counting down the minutes until she could clock out and get the hell out of there. She wasn’t about to rush Stacy, but her eyes flashed back and forth between the time and the mindless game she was playing on her cellphone when a bell sounded above the radio playing throughout the café. With a hope she could almost physically feel, prayed it was Stacy. Instead, it was one of her regulars and had it not been her foul mood, she would have been happy to see him – he was the best tipper she’s ever had. She was typing in his drink order before he even reached the counter and the younger gal behind her began the process. She managed a smile when she received her tip but pulled out her phone again and returned to the dull game she was playing.

The next thing she knew people were screaming inside the café and running out the door. The entire thing seemed to happen in seconds; a woman burst through the doors, literally scaring everyone out of the place including staff, and was advancing on her with a look in her eyes that Damany had seen a wolf have in a documentary on Animal Planet once, then the man from minutes before was back inside and beside her like The goddamn Flash. He looked different now though, giant ram’s horns protruded from his skull, his eyes looked like they held an entire constellation of stars and his entire aura was now…visible? While he and the killer argued back and forth and eventually threw themselves into a minor brawl, Damany was lost in just about every aspect of the man that was just normal, albeit amazing tipper. In a blink of an eye, before she could even process a man with horns and a blood-crazed woman coming at her, he was at her side again and they were gone.

The café was gone. Hell, the entire town was gone. Damany stood in place trying to recover from the quick onset of nausea. She wasn’t sure what she was feeling beyond that; panic, overwhelming anxiety, or a new level of fear she hadn’t needn’t to identify until now. Looking around gave her no clues as to where she was taken but all thought stopped entirely when an owl standing close to 6ft tall from claws to the top of its head descended on them like a mass of semi-opaque black smoke. It cocked its head to the side and its large maroon eyes bore into the strange man and somehow Damany knew they were communicating. As the silence grew in a conversation she was not apart of, Damany was slowly regaining ground on her thoughts. She may not have recognized the exact location, but the trees told her she was still in Vermont, and that meant she could still get to the twins. She looked over she shoulder to see nothing but a thick barrier of trees and black beyond. How was she going to get to the twins…? Her breathing began to quicken, her focusing entirely on escaping to the girls and when Kristianyo introduced himself finally and even the great barn owl that had departed.

Just as fast as Kristianyo had started talking, he was finished and was walking away from her. He meant for her to follow him inside – ‘Rule one of life; Don’t talk to strangers. Rule two of life; Don’t follow them into their house.’ With one last fleeting look over her shoulder, she took his words to heart and with great hesitation followed him inside. Please don’t kill me, please don’ kill me, please don’ kill me.

The moment she stepped over the threshold the door shut so softly behind her she wouldn’t have noticed it if it weren’t for the sunlight suddenly disappearing behind her. Immediately Damany was consumed by the dozens of tiny floating balls of various colored flames that bobbed around the air above their heads as if they were ironically in water. They were absolutely gorgeous, so much so that she didn’t realize that all feelings of anxiety and fear had dissipated when she entered Kristianyo’s home. A soft violet flame drifted gently toward Damany and without thinking she reached a hand out to touch it.

“Pretty, isn’t it?” Kristianyo’s voice floated across the room from the large lush chair where he sat, between and around the fires lighting the room.

Damany lowered her hand, looked to Kristianyo and was taken aback by his relaxed exposition. He was slumped in a high, velvet lined chair with one leg draped over and arm of the chair and his hands linked together under his chin, staring directly at her. This time when she looked at him his horns and galaxy eyes were as familiar to her as her younger sisters. “What the fuck was going on? I need to get back to my sisters.” She took a few steps toward him, her hands clenching into fists that were now at her sides. “Who the fuck was that woman? I have so many fucking questions!” Damany was on the verge of screaming and with every step closer to Kristianyo she took, the higher in volume her voice got.

“Well, to answer your first question would just take too long. I can ask Abbs to get your sisters if you’d like. That woman was Sentinelle, and I do not doubt you have questions, your mind has been asleep for quite some time. Although,” Kristianyo cocked his head to the side like a narrowed his eyes at the fuming woman, “I have no idea who you are, why your mind was asleep or why Sentinelle was sent to kill you.”

Damany’s mouth fell open. The aloof tone he had, like this was some casual conversation they were having while Stacy made his coffee behind her, it was starting to drive her up a wall. “Yes. Please. At the risk of traumatizing them, I’d like them with me please.” She tried to reel in the anger a bit but wasn’t doing a very good job. “Kill me! That crazy eyed bitch was sent to kill me!?” The last thread that was hold whatever composure she had just broke. She spun on her heel and began pacing in the space of the living room. “Why was she sent to kill me?” In the back of her head she knew she was ignoring some pretty solid questions, but she filed them away for later.

“You obviously have something to do with the war. This war has been ongoing for hundreds of years between, in laymans terms, overpowered siblings that want even more power.” He dropped his hands to his knees and leaning forwarded, stopping her pacing to look him full in the face. “I have been successful thus far to have be thought of as dead for a mass majority of this ridiculous feud,” an aggravated hand waved through the air, “until your mind decided to awaken and alert Sentinelle.” He studied her closely, “I have not been exposed entirely, but Vindico will know I’m alive before long. Hm, it would be best Abbs get the children regardless…” Kristianyo’s voice drifted off amongst the gently moving flames.

“What.The.Actual.Fuck.” It was more of a statement than a question. Damany felt like she had been taken from her life and dropped into some kind of Netflix show halfway through a season. It was like there was a gaping hole in the story line and she was the only one who didn’t understand the context of everything. She noticed a nearby chair and forced herself to sit. “I just don’t understand. What exactly do I have to do with a feud between two siblings?” As she rubbed her face with her hands, she could smell coffee on her palms and only then remembered she was wearing her apron. She tore it off and stared down at the dirty, coffee stained fabric in her hands. “How did we get here, why do you have horns, and why can I literally see the stars in your eyes?” All the questions flooded out of her before she could stop herself, the last one in particular slid out without permission. A man’s eye color really should be the least of her concerns, but somehow, she would have felt slightly more at ease if they were at least red, not this constellation. At least then she could possibly at least identify him as a demon.

“Magic.” It was a one-word answer. A word that was previously considered to be light hearted and even fun, now was heavy and with what little she had seen, bloodstained. Kristianyo’s tone carried all of it with finality.

“You’re joking?” Damany couldn’t stop the chuckle when he shook his head no.

Suddenly, the room filled with thick, black smoke and two small figures could be seen within it holding hands. When the smoke cleared Abyss solidified next to her companion and the twins scurried to Damany. She leaned off the chair to embrace them both and bring them close to her. It was going to be impossible to explain all this to them. When she released them both her hands found theirs just in time for them to notice their surroundings and current company. Damany took their silence as a mixture of fear and being awestruck at what she could only describe now as magic.

The questions she expected from at least Amethyst didn’t come and the girls remained very silent. In the bewilderment of the twins, Kristianyo did his best to reword everything for them. While Amethyst seemed to do her best to absorb what was happening with a brave face that was cracking with terror, Wallflower had no qualms with latching on to Damany’s arm with a grip that suggested she would die if she let go. Damany pushed the girls into the chair she was just in and stood in front of them. She felt stronger, more collected, now that the twins were with her and unharmed. She felt an indescribable shift in the core of her chest that spread like a liquid heat over the rest of her. The changes she was feeling must have been obvious on her face, because Kristianyo picked up on it just as fast as the feeling consumed her.

The air around her was almost vibrating with a vast mixture of emotions and the severe energy shift repelled the floating balls of fire, creating a large buffer zone between them and Damany. She gave them barely a side glance, they suddenly seemed so much more familiar than just minutes before. As Damany began slowly closing the space between her and this wizard, he himself shifted in his seat to look at her properly as she approached. By the time she was inches from him, it was like the veil she had been living under was abruptly removed and the darkness she didn’t realize she was living under. Her eye color shifted to a bright, almost blinding crystalized amber color, her movements were fluid and she could suddenly feel every bit of liquid in the place. With the surge of magic that was now fully awake came the surge of memories of lives past.

Whatever Damany had planned to say to him during her short march across the filthy living room was lost in the tides of everything else that was awakening within her. As she stood in silence, amber eyes unfocused, Kristianyo stared with deep anticipation. He could feel she was undergoing some kind of self-realization, she was changing her entire environment; charging the air, feeding the fires that bobbed over their heads, Abyss shifted uncomfortably next to him. The excitement he felt at knowing he was right about this girl, it was better than anything he’d felt in years.

It was apparent her change had finished, he clapped his hands together and stood to look down at her slightly. “I knew it. Now,” Kristianyo smiled broadly when she looked up and met his eyes. He silently thanked whatever the reason was that woke her internally, whether it be in the presence of strong magic or the sense of immense danger. “Are you able to tell me what is going on here or are we going to have to figure something else out?”

She looked up at him with a wicked grin and squared out her shoulders, “I remember fuckin’ shit up.” Damany’s playful tone matched his and she could tell it caught him off-guard. It made her laugh and with a spin on her heel she returned to the twins and knelt down. “I think it would be best if we stayed here for a while, okay?” She hushed both girls when they questioned the noticeable change in her eyes and they fell silent again. Amethyst crossed her arms and fell back against the chair and Flower leaned back slowly, her eyes drifting up to the relaxing bobs of fire. With the best reassuring smile she could manage, which turned out to be pretty damn bright and happy, she told them everything would be fine accompanied by gentle pats on their knees.

When she stood back up and turned to Kristianyo, a long dormant bubbly personality finally overfilled her, and she couldn’t deny she felt amazing. “I thought you were dead, but here you are! I never dreamed you would be here when I finally came to! Holy shit, and his Familiar,” There was clear awe in her voice. She looked around the room and smiled at the fires in the air and reached out for one, when she came close it glided into her palm without so much as overwarming her skin. Then, as if it her a bird, she gently pushed it back to join the others. “Well,” she folded her arms over her chest, matching Amethyst behind her, “the last I remember was being in Queen Vindico’s main courtroom waiting for the Siren to come through. Before she showed up though, there was an explosion that took out a decent chunk of where we were and through the gaping hole in the castle came Aquamarinya, whom I also believed to be dead.” She looked the wizard up and down with a judgmental eye before continuing. “I remember her looking pretty damn healthy, not unlike yourself, but the Siren wasn’t far behind. I was knocked out shortly after realizing the Siren was apparently waiting for the perfect time to reintroduce the blood-thirsty whale of a woman.” She ended her little story with a shrug but didn’t hide the guilt. “I had no idea the Queen’s sister was alive and now we all know the Siren is shady, at my personal expense, might I add.”

Kristianyo stood there, stunned. His grin fell away, and his hands were at his sides. “YOU reignited the war!?” The anger was just as quick as Damany’s awakening and now he was the one left to be floored about how casual the little demon was being. “What could you have possibly gained from whatever it was you were doing!?” He roared and clenched his fists, if it weren’t for the twins in the chair behind her things would be much more elevated.

Her face fell slightly, “I honestly can’t remember. I think it may have been Sentinelle that knocked me out… She was behind me in the shadows watching when the explosion happened. So, if it wasn’t her tossing me out of the way that knocked me out, it must have been falling debris. I don’t know what else could have hit me hard enough to lose my memory.” She absently rubbed a spot on the back of her head and stared at the floor. “I felt incredible pain and had terrible tunnel vision before going unconscious. “

Kristianyo relaxed a bit and fell back into his chair. “I believe you hit your head, but I also would like to know what you were doing there.”

“I really can’t remember, I barely remember the faces. For that I am truly sorry. If I’m being honest though, I do not believe what happened was my goal at all. I was just as thrilled the war was thought to be over as everyone else. The last thing I wanted was to wake the Queen of War, let alone allow myself to be anywhere near where she would make her reappearance.” She couldn’t remain serious for long and Damany shifted from her part in the fall of the peaceful Royals, “Where have you been? Every other magic wielder chose a side and fought, I’m just a lowly water demon I choose to remain independent. Which I guess, had gone out the window now…”

With a long-winded sigh, Kristianyo explained he was fonder of his life than the quarrels of siblings. “I was not prepared to hide a demon and her two halfing siblings.”

Damany spread her arms wide and smiled, “Well, Captain Mysterious, here we are! We need a plan, since you know, Sentinelle knows I’m not really dead either… Which seemed to really upset her…” She laughed falsely to test the waters and slightly grimaced, “Which again, sorry about the whole Queen of War thing…”
