Flames licked at his skin, scorching his feet as he ran through the town. Choking smoke brought tears to his eyes, which dried on his cheeks in the heat as he fled the town, his heart hammering in his chest and fear swirling through his mind. Family and friends, gone. He'd seen them burning in front of him, trapped in the building he had once called home. There was no time to grieve, he had to get away from this nightmare.
Eventually he found himself in the desert, collapsing in the shade of a nearby rock formation, exhausted by fear and covered in soot. As he lay upon the cool sand his eyes slowly closed, his last image that of his town, glowing orange against the red of the slowly setting sun. His last thoughts before sleep were that of betrayal and anger that burnt as bright as those flames.
When he awoke his first view was that of the burnt out town, the charred remains reaching into the sky like a decaying corpse. He stared for the longest time, tears streaming down his soot covered cheeks before he roared his rage to the sky, cursing Ra, the towns sacred protector with all his heart for not helping. It would have been a simple task for a deity so powerful, yet nothing had been done to save anyone.
Suddenly a bright light flared across the sky, causing Akhet to throw his arms across his face to shield his eyes. Unseen heat washed across his body, burning without leaving a mark as he felt himself lifted from the warm sand below. Suddenly he found himself thrown against a hard, wooden surface and forcing his eyes open, he looked around.
He was aboard the Solar Barque, the imposing figure of Ra standing before him, eyes ablaze with anger. Akhet kept himself on the floor, trembling with fear as he gazed upwards, regretting every word he said. He opened his mouth to speak, but before a single sound had left his throat the voice of Ra boomed above him.
You who dares to curse me before knowing the truth, you who shows disrespect and ungratefulness for your own life, I have brought you before me to hear this. I did not choose to not act out of malice, but instead out of inability. Even we Gods have our place, all I was able to do was make sure their passing was gentle.
Again Akhet went to speak, crawling forward on hands and knees with tears lingering in his eyes, once again he was cut off.
Even though you cower before me, I still feel your blame and rage for me deep within your heart. With this you shall be a vessel of my power, see what you may do in my stead
Darkness clouded Akhet's mind, when he awoke he found himself back upon the desert sand. Had it been just a dream? Wiping the sand and soot from he face and neck, he hands knocked against a metal band wrapped around his throat. Confused he felt around it, pulling to try to remove the foreign object, as he did so it began to grow warmer until it began to burn his skin. Letting go it once again grew cold. No dream then, but what was he to do now and what did it all mean? Emotions ran through his mind confusion, grief and anger the most prominent. Without warning flames licked across his skin, scorching the sand before him. With a yell he jumped back, scared of what he had done. From this point forward, he knew his life was to change.
Knowing he had to find answers and control this new found power, he took to wandering from town to town, spending most of his nights out in the desert. One night, after several years of wandering without hope, he found himself at a temple of Bastet, tired and hungry he went inside. Head hung low, he knelt at the alter, whispering over and over apologies and wishes for help. Crawling to the wall, he curled up and fell asleep.
The sound of cats crying awoke him and for a second he was unsure of where he was. In the moonlight before him, several of the sacred temple cats were hissing, backs arched at an unknown figure. In their arms were three tiny kittens, only a few days old. The mother of the kittens was at the head of the group, yowling for her young as she jumped at the thief, clawing and biting as best she could. Without warning the thief kicked her, sending her flying across the floor.
Akhet jumped to his feet, rushing forward and yelling at the top of his lungs, flames dancing across the stone floor. In terror the thief dropped the kittens, running for his life and frantically batting at his singed clothes and skin. Akhet lifted the kittens gently, checking they were unharmed and cradling them in his arms. With a circle of cats around him, he went to the mother, lowering the crying kittens to her and running a hand along her back, appearing to not be seriously damaged.
From that day forth, Akhet knew that this was his place, each night he slept amongst the sacred cats with the statue of Bastet watching over him, awaking each morning to purrs and meows. The temples priests grew fond of him, thankful for what he had done but never learning of his gift from Ra. They brought him food and clothes, accepting him of one of their own, happy to leave the temple to his watchful eye at night.
For the first time since the fire, Akhet found himself truly happy.
