In the heavens above, the stars shine bright
Each one just a ball of burning white light
But between those stars we connect the dots
Images forming within our thoughts

In the autumn winds a romance occurs
Unaware of all the emotions stirred
A couple together, bound by the love they share
No matter what happens, it will always be there

In the lifetime of every human being
We often trust at least once without seeing
Our faith in the hands of those we believe
Just a bond formed between quaint memories

For nothing with us ever truly lives
So there is no need to worry, no need to forgive
Only love those that you wish to bring to life
And end all the worry, grudges, and strife

Love, Imagination, and Memories alike
Are the keys to eternal life
The rhymes and the poetry might make this sound nice
But I’m not sure if it will ever come out right

The ones we loved, cared for, and cherished
Leave us behind as their bodies perish
But nothing is gone if we’re still all sane
Because their true beings are etched in our brain

For memories and emotions are all we ever knew
And as long as you have those, they live as long as you
Yes, the future to create them is now gone
But the time to use them will never be wrong

And the sadness that comes, with the passing of one
Can’t be helped anymore than the shining of the sun
But like the sun at the break of dawn
Or the early dew on the morning lawn

Petunia will always let you know, no matter how far
That she’s still happy as long as you are

The time was near she could feel it. She laid down and knew her time was almost up. She looked back thru her memories from the first day she could remember and smiled. She had led a good life and her family had always been there for her thru good times and bad. She would miss Bren and her kids. She thought back to all the play times they had and knew that they all remembered also. Soon she would pass to the next level of existence and smiled because she knew that she would be able to wait for them. Some how she also knew that she would be able to watch over them and be near them when they needed her and she would be able to give some comfort for whatever hurt or pain they had. Moments turned into minutes as she felt the strand of her life ebbing out and she suddenly wondered if she would have somebody on the other side waiting for her to cross. The darkness was suddenly getting brighter and she could see vague shapes coming towards her. Some walked on four legs and some on two legs but they all had one thing in common they all had wings slowly moving back and forth. She felt her heart beating slower and slower and the shapes were becoming sharper and suddenly she could see them clearly. The Angles had come for her she couldn't believe it, all of them just for her. They beckoned her to come with them to follow them to the great light. She turned and looked back and was suddenly both very sad and very excited. She would miss this world with her family but she knew that what lay ahead was going to allow her to watch over them. She turned towards the Angels and started walking towards them feeling her heart stop and suddenly she was released fully to this other plane of existence. The Angels walked with her towards the light, just before she got there she felt like all her cares and worries had been lifted forever and she felt like she could fly. Amazed at this feeling she looked down and realized she was flying her wings were carrying her towards the light faster and faster until she went into the light never to be seen in this life again but knowing she would always be watching until the day she would come meet her family as her's had done for her.

The gentle wind blew across her fur, causing it to flitter about in an unpredictable mess. She hadn’t any idea where she was, but the landscape was beautiful, filled with various hues of green from the trees and the grass. In between were the vibrant colors of the various fruit plants everywhere, made more precious by the pink sunset filling the sky with its unnatural glow. She was lost, but something told her that she didn’t want to be found.

Every day and every night she did as she pleased, whether it was sun bathing in her favorite patch of grass or catching an abundance of rabbits that seemingly appeared out of nowhere. She was in a paradise and she was having the time of her life. That is, until she realized that no matter what she did she seemed to not have anyone to share it with, no one to talk with, just herself and nature. And despite the vast field of openness before her, she hadn’t known when she was as lonely as she was now as she drifted to sleep, in her defense, though; she hadn’t known much to begin with.

In the morning it wasn’t just her eyes that were shot into awareness, but her ears. The fields that were filled with beauty and emptiness were now flooded with more dogs than she’d ever seen, dogs of all shapes and colors, even some like her, with a small body and long fur, sometimes covering up their surprisingly large eyes. She stood there in shock, unable to move, until one of the dogs noticed her and walked up. It was a large dog, at least compared to her, and its short, black fur was shiny as the sun lit it up.

“Hey there.” The apparent female dog spoke, her voice soothing and light, like a caring mother. “I know you’re new here, but do you have any questions first?”

Despite wanting to ask who she was herself and who was talking to her, she just stood there, mouth agape and tongue hanging out, but not panting.

After the brief pause of silence the larger dog continued, “Well, I’m Jewel, but honestly you can call me whatever you want. I have so many names I don’t really think I actually have a real name anymore. And it’s nice to meet you…” she leaned her head closer to the smaller dog, looking just below her face, “Petunia Mae”

“H-how do you know my name?” Petunia asked, “I don’t even know my name!”

Jewel looked at Petunia with a sorrowed smile. “I looked at your collar. Most of us here have collars that tell us what are name is, usually around our necks.” At that Jewel looked upwards, allowing Petunia to see the contrasting red collar against her black fur. She hadn’t noticed it before but now it was blatantly obvious, as was the feeling of her own collar on her neck.

“I don’t – what is this place?” Petunia asked in an almost fearful tone, wondering why the dream she was having had just turned into a nightmare.

“I can’t really explain it, but you’re basically in Dog Heaven.” Jewel said hesitantly, waiting for Petunia to burst with rage as most dogs did when they first found out about their fate.

“You mean… I’m dead?” Her voice was quivering, trying to hold back tears that were swelling up in her eyes, and a lump growing in her throat. “What exactly do you mean?” She stopped her question abruptly, trying to ask more, but without success as it had become too difficult to talk and hold back her emotions.

“I mean what I said, you’ve died.” Jewel told her, trying to calm her in her tone of voice. “I can’t tell you how and I can’t tell you why, unfortunately. I can, however, tell you that this place isn’t forever, well not exactly forever…” She was about to continue when she saw that Petunia’s head was pressed against the floor, trying desperately to keep the tears from rolling down her face. Controlled by empathy, Jewel laid down next to Petunia, her larger body able to circle most of the way around her. And there they stayed, embracing each other in tears until they both fell asleep, woken up by the sunlight in the morning.

It had been a week since Petunia Mae discovered where she was, what her fate had been, and why she was here. She wasn’t back to normal yet, but she was able to easily converse with the other dogs that she had encountered, learning all about them and what they were like, often times finding herself spending hours discussing the multitude of similarities that they all shared. And even though she still wasn’t fully recovered, everything else seemed to be, until one of her newly acquired friends, Daisy, had one day rushed into nowhere, one second racing along with everyone else, and the next gone, like the glimmer of light Petunia thought she saw when she disappeared as well.

Looking for answers, Petunia Mae quickly ran to the first dog she met here, Jewel, who, as she found out soon after the first day they met, stayed in the same monetary place for the most part, under the shade of an enormously grown oak tree which scattered its acorns farther than Petunia thought possible if she hadn’t seen it with her own eyes. When she got there Jewel was already waiting for her, standing and waiting for the questions about to come.

“What just happened to Daisy!” Petunia shouted, not sure how she should feel. “Did she just die again?! Why did she just disappear like that?”

Jewel smiled at Petunia, it was actually the first time they talked since their first encounter. “In a sense, I suppose you could say she died again, but I wouldn’t call it that. She’s just arrived in the place she’s truly wanted to go since she got here.” There was a pause as Jewel expected Petunia to ask more questions, but as it remained silent she continued, “This place is called ‘Dog’ Heaven for a reason, it isn’t Heaven, but more like an in between. A place that I assume exists for all animals.

“Basically, this is the place where we wait for our owners to die. In here we have an indefinite paradise as best as we can have it. It’s why we also seemingly came out of nowhere for you, because I’m assuming your original paradise, or Heaven, was filled with beauty rather than company. That is, until you got lonely, and realized that you would rather have other fellow dogs to play with. It’s how most of us end up here, anyway from an hour to a year after our death, depending on how much you like solitary. And –“

“Owner?” Petunia interrupted. “What exactly is that?”

Jewel sighed, starting again. “An owner is just that, someone owned you while you were alive. Dogs have different purposes to their owners, with the most common being to just be a friend. And, from my experience here, I’ve found that those who have forgotten all of this have either forgotten it because their life was so horrible that the memory would haunt them to a point where paradise was non-existent, or because their life was so… loved that they couldn’t know paradise without their owners, who are not allowed to come here. Unfortunately, I can’t tell you what category you fall under, but whichever it is, I’m sure you’ll find a loving owner when the time is right. I’ve seen many dogs come here, abandoned, some without a home to begin with, and all of them have found a way to get out, showing themselves to a person who could use another dog or two in their heaven.”

“So then, “Petunia Mae started, “Why are you still here? You said it yourself; you can hitch a ride or something to get out of here and into true happiness. Why haven’t you?”

“How do you even know how long I’ve been here? I could’ve only gotten here moment before you did.” Jewel snarled defensively.

“I can see it in you.” Petunia replied. “Your eyes, your words, your posture, your everything. You’ve been here longer than any dog here, and depending on owners that could be over 100, maybe even 200 years!”

Jewel looked at Petunia, wanting her to leave, but wanting to explain to her the story that she bore, a story that no one had ever asked about. After a while she gave in to her second want, correcting, “367 years to be exact. 367 years just watching as dogs came and went, not a single one staying to be my friend, not a single one whose owners included someone like me in their own heaven. My original owner had died shortly after I myself died, but when he came and I saw his face light up, he looked right past me, to a dog that I’d never seen before, to a dog that he’d spent all of his childhood growing up with and all of his adulthood praying to see again. I was apparently his replacement, but I of course could never replace another being in his heart, and he was never able to add another one into it.

“So I was lost here and in a way I wanted to be, but by the time I realized how much I possibly wanted to leave it was too late and I was just too elder-like to show enough emotion to explain this to anyone. I honestly still don’t know if I can regret anything because I don’t know if it’s a good or a bad thing that I’ve become like this guide for other dogs, but I do know that I miss being loved by a human.”

Petunia could see Jewel drop her head as she told her story and, when she was done, Petunia nuzzled her head against Jewel’s body, lifting her head up. “I’m sure we have a lot more to talk about, but you have to promise me that when my owner comes to take me away to our heaven you will come with me.”

“But you don’t even know if your owner wants me. If they even want you!” Jewel protested.

Petunia looked into her eyes though. She was protesting out of the fear of rejection. Out of fear that she could lose even more, so Petunia Mae just stared into her eyes, and calmly repeated, “Promise me.”

With that command Jewel had nothing to do but nod. She had never made a plan for the future after what she went through, but Petunia had something about her, something that affected those around her as well. Despite not knowing the future, Jewel and Petunia ended up spending time together, with an eventual promise being that they would stick together no matter what, although Petunia knew in her heart that she had an owner who loved her enough to bring along another dog.

So together they played, laughed, ate, waited, and hoped. Hoped that the future was greater than either one of them could’ve imagined. Deep down knowing that the future had something great planned for them because no matter how lost or how forgotten someone is, the love they may have once shared is always there, somewhere, whether either one knows it or not.

RIP little angel-

I have loved you from the day you came into my life,
and now it is time for me to let you go.
I could not watch you suffer,
I could not see you in pain.
Now you are free.
Your body is no longer sick,
or weak, or hurting.
Now you can run with the others,
playing and hunting as wild things do.
Because I loved you,
I had to let you go.

You will live forever in our hearts.

A song from Jessica for you Petunia---
You are my Tuna, my only Tuners
You make me happy, when skies are grey
You'll never know Petunia, how much I love you.
Please don't take, my Petunia Mae away.
