Rise above the mountains
Light a fire in the sky

It was only quite recently that I was introduced to this band, and it happened a few months ago (early summer 2021) as I was watching a guy react to their The Mead Song. Truth be told I didn’t think much of them at the time, but the guy was pausing every so often to comment on the song and what they were wearing that I didn’t really have a chance to get into the song properly. Then, in early September 2021 I ended up on the YouTube page of AFM Records by going down the proverbial rabbit hole that is YouTube recommended videos. And one their page I ended up looking through the YouTube links for the bands that are signed to their label, and Brothers of Metal was one of those bands. I then started to listen to their songs and I was hooked right away.
I’ve been a big fan of mythology for a long time and one of the mythologies that I especially love is the Norse one. Greek is my absolute favorite, but Norse is definitely a close second. And it’s not just because I’m from Sweden, but the fact that vikings and Norse mythology is a part of my country's history definitely helps. Plus the fact that I’m absolutely in love with the game Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla also helps. Riding along the roads of England in that game while Brothers Unite was playing was pretty awesome!
Now, they don’t have a lot of songs out yet so I basically like all of what they have to offer. But I am still able to rank their songs. And some of them won’t be making the honorable mentions list. That list is as follows: Death of the God of Light, Son of Odin, Prophecy of Ragnarök, Tyr, Siblings of Metal, Freya, Sleipnir, Fire, Blood and Steel, Powersnake, Hel, Theft of the Hammer and To the Skies and Beyond.

For the blood is running still
From the roots of Yggdrasil

Now for the top ten Brothers of Metal songs, according to me. In tenth place we have Njord. A common theme with all of these songs will be that I love the folk sound that they have in them. In this song in particular I love that the male lead singer, Joakim, gets to sing a lot more in this one than in some of their other songs.
In ninth place we have Gods of War. In this one we get to hear the female vocalist, Ylva, belt out with her beautiful voice. And it has a bit more of grandeur to it, and power, which is fitting since it’s about the sons of Odin.
As number eight I have Chain Breaker. I love the energy of this one. Especially when it gets to the chorus. And another common thing with all of the songs that they’ve made and part of the reason for me loving them is because of the fact that they are all about different parts of Norse mythology, or about vikings. This one is obviously about Fenris, about how he was chained to a mountain and then broke free.
Number seven on my list is Emblas Saga. Now this one is a lot different than the other songs. It starts off with lovely traditional singing, and then it’s followed by what sounds like an old man that starts to tell us about how the first humans were created according to the Norse mythology.
In sixth place we have One. Like the first song on the list this one is about the vikings, and not their mythology. To me it’s as close to a ballad as you can get with this band. And that’s just fine by me. And, honestly, the chorus is sort of inspirational.
In fifth place we have Kaunaz Dagaz, which to me is just a fun and energy filled song that gets me feeling pumped up. And Ylva’s song at the beginning is just beautiful. Now, in fourth place I have put the song Defenders of Valhalla. This one is another song that is really great to play AC:Valhalla along with. And I love the beginning of it because it makes me think of taverns and inns in fantasy games.

Now then, time for my top three songs by this band. And in third place I have put Ride of the Valkyries. Great energy, great sound and just fast and fun. This one is kind of a mix of both being about vikings and mythology as it is about the fallen warriors being taken to the Hall of the Slain by the valkyries.
In second place I have the song Yggdrasil. It’s one of their calmer songs, for sure. But I love it, especially the chorus. I can honestly have this one and the one in first place on repeat the whole day long without issue. And I will sing along every time I hear them.
Now, my absolute favorite song by this band is the one that I mentioned at the beginning of this text, Brothers Unite. It just embodies the core of what it, in my opinion, meant to be a viking warrior. You fought with all of your might with no fear of dying because when you died you were brought up to Valhalla, to the Hall of the Slain where you would enjoy the eternal feasts and do battles every day without any worries. And once Ragnarök happened you would happily defend Valhalla.

Rise above the mountains
Light a fire in the sky

A lot of people will probably disregard this group as just being silly and not a true metal band, but I think that there is definitely room for humor in the world of metal. And I love that they can in a way educate people about the vikings and the Norse mythology with their music. I, for one, will be hoping that they make a lot more music going forward, because I will be listening to all of it. And most likely loving it all! Keep up the good work, all eight of you ♥️
