INFO

Plutarch was a Greek philosopher born in Chareoneos in 46 BC and died approximately around 119 BCE. He was a profilic writer throughout his lifetime and wrote a number of different biographies about influential periods in Roman history and about important Roman figures. The biographies he wrote of various influential Roman figures such as Julius Caesar were originally compiled in an anthology titled Parallel Lives. He is considered one of the most well known and influential historians of that period however, it must be noted that although his histories have been used as a general source for many historians regarding famous historical figures and events from that time period, he was first of all a philosopher before he was a historian. Thus, there are inaccuracies in his biographies as well as exaggerations of events. He also makes mention of the influence of the gods/gods in certain events which obviously was not true. That said, during that time period, it is noted that he may of also simply believed that certain events had some godly influence in them as deities were believed to factor into daily Grecian life.

He published over a 100 books in his lifetime and it is noted that while his parallel lives biographies and other books that he wrote on politics and historical events were accounts of real people and historical events he was also a philosopher. He was noted for entwining moral messages within the text of the books he wrote as well.
