It was the lime-blossom-tree.
Glowing flamy yellow it's blossoms were luring him with sweet scent.
"Drink from me! Drink from me!"
Thus Silverflood followed this call this year as every other yearbefore, like thousands of his kind. A call, that would leadinevitably to death. Drunken from the sweet scent and the pleasuresof gluttony he didn't notice his fellows one after the othercrashing into death.
Nor could he stop himself sipping the sweet nectar, until heeventually lost grip and crashed down as well. His little wingscouldn't carry his stuffed body, his feet couldn't catch his step.He crashed on his back, fidgeting helpless and gasping for breath. The big chow-down began. Birds and frogs came and feasted on thehelpless insects, carelessly trampling down the bigger ones.Silverflood started pleading.
"I don't want to die... not like this... not today... youtreacherous tree..."
If he just fidgeted and struggled enough maybe he would lose enoughweight to be able to get on his feet again... and to fly again.
"Look - one survived!"
Silverflood was very dizzy when he was picked up. The big ones weretheir worst enemies, hunted them and killed them - and they were thegardeners of the deadly lime-trees.
"I'll take it to the laboratory..."
Darkness embraced the little insect. The intoxication of thelime-tree blossoms seemed to get it.
"Tic tic tic..."
Silverflood woke up. Gone was the gold of the blossoms - replaced byrusty metal.
Gone the sweet scent of the blossoms - replaced by smoke and dust.Machines were all around him and did whatever their taks was withmuch noise. But the more Silverflood listened the more he seemed tounderstand them.
A tiny golden insect, powered by numerous small cogwheels, landednext to him. Golden like the blossoms, but a masterpiece ofmechanics.
"My name is Chula", it introduced itself. "I'm going to wind youup..."
Minuscule legs took the gear that protruded from Silverfloodsshoulder and turned it and that way winded up the diminutiveclockwork that was inside him. Silverflood flapped his wings, flew asmall circle and landed again. What had happened to him?
"Am I dead?"
"You will live forever, Silverflood. I'm all mechanic, but you - youare alive, driven by the power of the machines, by gears, mechanicsand steam. You will last an eternity and be part of the Technics. Themaster said you are so small and nimble you will to the precisionmechanics for him..."
Silverflood crooked his head, looked around.
And felt as if the watches were looking down on him.
"Tic tic tic..."

"Are you sure that he is aware of us, Doctor?"
Worried the old woman looked at the jung lad who once was her son.Disfigured by the accident, full of artificial replacements, thepride of her family was no longer recognizable. He seemed to beawake, but his eyes never focused on any of them. Only a bumble-bee,that had gotten into the sickroom and had landed on his hand, seemedto attract his attention.
"I cannot promise anything. We used the latest technology to keep himalive. But his head was very injured. Who knows what is going oninside..."
Silverflood got up. Noone kept him, they all wanted to know how hewould handle the wheels, mechanics and the steam engine. Everymovement would further wind up the wheelwork.
"He doesn't see us", his mother remarked.
"Tic tic tic...", the clock went on. Silverflood knew that he hadseen it before.
The father stood aside, rubbed his temples.
"He looks like a monstrous insect", he mumbled. The accident haddestroyed his life.
"Doesn't he speak at all?"
On a big dark clock dangled a small pocket watch. Silverflood flewover there, had a closer look.
"Repair", he croaked. His voice sounded shallow and mechanical.
The young lad went to his father, took his pocket watch. His fatherlet him. At least there was something that his son noticed, even ifit was only the clockwork.
"It was the lime-blossom-tree's fault", his mother sobbed. "Thebranch was so heavy that it broke and hit him." Instead of dyingSilverflood had got a second chance.
A mechanic body.
A new life.
... at least within his mechanical mind.
