My favorite part of the Zelda franchise? The horse, of course!

Here's the original Epona from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Named after the goddess of horses, Epona has become a treasured character of the Zelda series. The first Zelda game to introduce her was entirely configured around the mechanic of riding her! She is the reason for the open fields of Hyrule, giving players the opportunity to ride her around a wide open space. Her creation has influenced the direction of the Zelda game series as it was the catalyst for free roaming and horse gameplay!

Here's Epona in The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

In the Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, you can turn into a wolf and actually talk to Epona! Unfortunately, all she does is urge you to return to your human form so you can save Hyrule together. I wish she would say more, but they didn't code it in. Perhaps she could have asked you to spare a moment to get her some carrots, or expressed fondness for Link's childhood friend Ilia, or wished to run through the grasses of Hyrule fields again... Well, that's what I would have written in for some alternative text if I were given the chance!

Epona has a one-track mind in The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

As the graphics improve, the horses of the Zelda franchise become more beautiful. Since the introduction of the Breath of the Wild games, Epona has no longer really been Link's de facto horse, but she is still specially available if you tap a Link Rider amiibo to scan her into the game.

The Link Rider Amiibo!
Though he's not riding Epona, this amiibo gives you Epona to ride.

And here is the good girl herself, once you've scanned her into the game:

Epona as seen in Breath of the Wild after being scanned in via amiibo!

This is the only way to get her into Breath of the Wild or its sequel, Tears of the Kingdom. This is a little unfortunate, but it is cool that players can now seek out horses of other colors, strengths, speeds, and abilities to travel alongside and fight for the safety of Hyrule. Of course, you can also get a horse motorcycle or gear that can summon your horse to you from anywhere in the game... but I prefer to just check out my horse from local stables in the game, wearing the extravagant set of gear. Perhaps it's less convenient, but I enjoy the look of the horses and don't mind riding a little more slowly around the map since I can enjoy the scenery that way. The free roaming camera controls allow you to spin 360 degrees around your horse, and the AI of the horse will automatically follow set paths on the map so you can casually roam and enjoy the beauty of the game and its aesthetics. Totally worth the tradeoff!

New horse; who dis? A new steed in The Legend of Zelda, Breath of the Wild

Though Link may ride other horses in the future, Epona will always be his first horsey friend, and her impact on the Zelda series cannot be understated. I really can't wait to see what the future holds for The Legend of Zelda, Epona, and the horses of this game franchise!

The words on this page are all from my own general knowledge of the Zelda series, summarized for your reading pleasure. I have a lot of thoughts on horse games, and Epona is a dear one for me. She paved the way for more horse games and for horses to be an important part of the Zelda series! For more information on the character, please visit This Character Wiki.
