Circa 2009
Running, she's always running. Running, or fighting, or training, or pushing her body to the limits in some way or another, ever since she could remember. At least Guevara had her unit-mates, the other X5's, those who were still alive, anyway. They were the only family she had ever known, but right now they were all in danger.

They'd lost one of their own not too long ago. He had a seizure during a training exercise, something all the X5's were apparently prone to, and that was it for him. The staff who ran things at the Manticore where they all lived took him away and for most of the X5's that was the last time they ever saw their brother. For Guevara, she could only wish now that it had been the last time she'd seen him, but later that night when she couldn't sleep she had slipped out of their room only to witness the unimaginable: their brother being autopsied on a table by the Manticore staff, their leader, Colonel Lydecker, watched on impassively. It still haunts Guevara's thoughts.

Guevara's big brother, Zack, says they should leave. Guevara isn't so sure. Their life has never been easy, with the brutal training and psychological testing, it is all a bit much sometimes, even for people as tough as the X5's, but what could there be to escape to? Guevara has never been outside Manticore, none of the X5's have. What if there really isn't anything else out there? Or what if it's even worse than things are here? But she's started seizing, just like their brother before her, so for Zack that's the last straw. It's time to run. At least running is familiar.

So now they're here, running through a forest, not sure where they're running to. There's only one thing certain--they're running away from Manticore, and Manticore is coming after them, with Lydecker leading the charge.

Guevara can feel the night air, sweet with the hint of freedom, rushing past her face fast enough to create a slipstream behind her. The X5's all have enhanced abilities, granted to them by their inception by Manticore. There's animal DNA in them, as well as human. It gives them enhanced strength, speed, reflexes, and stamina, along with a host of other enhancements over normal-born humans. They were raised to be killing machines, the best humanity had ever seen. It was their one advantage now, as they fled in the woods. As long as they kept running, no one could catch them on foot.

Manticore wouldn't just be on foot, though. That's why Guevara was going to meet up with her other X5 siblings as soon as there was a clearing in the woods. They needed to organize. Guevara put her nose to the air. She could smell and hear her siblings. They were beginning to converge up ahead, sensing, as she did now too, a small clearing ahead. She was the last to arrive at the clearing, and the first person her eyes met were the trusting and wise eyes of Zack. He had begun this escape to save Guevara, and she knew it. She trusted him completely.

Zack immediately suggested they all split up. Guevara hated the thought of that, but she couldn't deny the wisdom. They'd be harder to catch if they all went different directions, and they'd have an easier time blending in with the rest of humanity. Still, a place in Guevara's heart ached at the thought of never seeing Zack again. He was her brother, and her savior, not that she needed saving much, and she had always had her siblings. How could she make it in the human world without them?

They all looked up at the same instant, a sound coming from nearby, too close for comfort. Their pursuers were faster than they had hoped. "It's now or never," Zack whispered to the group, locking eyes with Guevara. They all nodded, understanding his meaning.

Zack stood, facing the enemy, ready to hold them off long enough for the others to make their escape. He stood a good chance, being even stronger and faster than other X5's, and Guevara knew it, but she didn't like it. What if he was recaptured, what if this was the last time Guevara saw him? The others quickly fled, disappearing into the night, but Guevara hesitated.

"Go!" Zack yelled, loud enough to give away their location to the Manticore staff coming for them. Guevara gave him one last thankful nod before turning to run towards freedom and away from the only home and family she'd ever known.

Circa 2021
Years later, Guevara had adjusted to living in the human world. She found herself in Seattle and got a job and things were looking alright. She even made a friend who could help her track down her other X5 brothers and sisters. The one of their number she'd wanted most to find - Zack - remained elusive. But she didn't let that discourage her. All in all life undercover hiding from Manticore wasn't so bad.

During the day Guevara had a job making deliveries as a bike messenger. It gave her helpful opportunities to stake out places for her night job as a sometimes-burglar. Both jobs funded her search for her siblings, but they also left her vulnerable. She knew it was only a matter of time until someone from Manticore tracked her down. She just hoped by that time she'd have enough friends and allies to handle it.

She was working her day job, minding her own business, when she first sensed something was off. She had been closing in on leads that Zack might be in Seattle, so she'd been looking forward to a possible reunion with him, but now she was afraid she may soon face a reunion with someone she least wanted to see again. Lydecker was after her again.

With the help of her friends Guevara discovered that Lydecker was indeed in Seattle, and he had enlisted the help of the Seattle Police Department to track her down, claiming she was wanted for murder. It wasn't true, but Lydecker had enough connections and credentials to back up his fabricated story that he was believed.

Lydecker came for her at night. Guevara had been so busy evading the police and trying to keep tabs on her friends that she hadn't been expecting him to come for her personally, but she turned down an alley to avoid being spotted by passing cars and here he was. Guevara's blood ran cold.

"Didn't see me coming, did you?" Lydecker asked.

It was true, Guevara realized, she hadn't. She should have smelled him or heard him or sensed him, anything, long before now.

"You have your friends, but I have mine, too," Lydecker said. "They're developing new technologies every day, all of which are being used to track down you and the rest of the X5's as we speak."

Guevara was trapped, and she knew it. She could fight her way out, but she didn't know what sort of weapons Lydecker was packing, and the thought of being caught off guard again was making her sick. It reminded her of the light-headed, almost dizzy feeling she would get right before having another seizure. Panic started to creep down the back of her neck.

"Let her go!"

Both Guevara and Lydecker turned to the sound of the new voice. It was deeper than Guevara remembered, but all her senses told her in a welcome instant that the man standing at the other end of the alley was none other than her brother, Zack.

"Zack!" the word fell from her lips before she could stop herself. Now was not the time to be emotional, but she'd looked for him for so long, and now here he was again, standing between her and danger."Go, Guevara," Zack said, resolution steeled in his voice. "He's been tracking you, but I've been tracking him. I've got this, now go."

Guevara wanted to run from Lydecker, but not like this, not when she finally found Zack again. It was just like when they'd first escaped Manticore, all those years before.

"Go!" Zack shouted again as he attacked Lydecker and the two fell upon each other.

Guevara took one last look at Zack before doing as he begged once more and fleeing to safety. Her motorcycle was nearby, and she hopped on it to speed away into the Seattle night.

In her heart she knew this wasn't over, none of it was over, but she was alive to fight and run another day. For now, that was enough.
