As Siamese twins, Sunny and Sunflower do everything together. They don't have much choice in the matter. There are a few things they readily agree on. Bugs are delicious, summer is much better than winter and frolicking in the wildflowers is the purest form of joy.
That's where their similarities end.
Sunny lives up to her name. She loves basking in the warmth of the sun and surrounding herself with the brightest yellow, orange and red flowers she can find. She makes wreaths that she can wear like a crown on her head, proudly parading through the meadow and showing off for the abundance of rabbits that are always sneaking in from the edge of the forest. They'll dart away at the slightest hint of a threat. Sunny tries to be soothing, speaking to them softly and leaving presents of clover and thistle blossoms beside the stream that borders Fairtree Forest.
Sunflower likes her namesake well enough but for the most part prefers flowers with cooler colors. While Sunny is pining for the heat of the sun, Sunflower will be yearning for a nice patch of shade where she can curl up and take a nap. Her sister's kind-hearted gestures toward those pesky rabbits drive her crazy. She would rather chase the critters far away from the pretty purple thistle blossoms that look so nice with the deep red sunflowers she has so carefully grown over the years. They are her own custom species with deep red petals and sky-blue centers, found nowhere else in the world.
They both have gardens that they tend with abundant care. Sunny likes to grow her plants in spirals that blend into one another, giving her garden the bird's eye view of a giant tie-dyed circle that has no real beginning or end.
Sunflower's rows look like they were laid out with a ruler. No weed would dare poke its ugly head above the soil in her domain. Where Sunny focuses on low-growing ground cover flowers, Sunflower tends to favor tall stems that wave gently in the breeze. Sunny has the occasional cheery garden gnome grinning or making funny faces while Sunflower uses rocks and flowing water to create pockets of serenity.
Since they share a body, they have to take turns in everything they do. They do try to be diplomatic but when Sunny's in the mood to chase a butterfly and Sunflower is looking forward to a long nap, they get into some pretty good scrapping sessions.
They rarely venture beyond the safety of their meadow. The forest is full of animals that would step on them or eat them. The river is particularly dangerous when your two heads disagree on which direction to swim. The human habitation is a horror world of stinky fumes, loud noises and glaring colors that certainly don't exist in nature.
When unwanted human visitors come to their corner of the world, they have a special place they go to hide. The wall is so ancient, it has mostly crumbled to dust. The patterns of moss, creeping flowers and aged peach stones perfectly blend with their many-colored skin, keeping all but the keenest-eyed humans from ever realizing their presence. Those few humans who did recognize the sisters were the sort more likely to keep the secrets of nature than spoil them.
They live on in their little green haven, tending their gardens and keeping the beauty of nature alive in a world where the drive of human greed so often consumes that which nature has taken thousands of years to create.
