Story

The human realm is very different from the Jade Court. The gods and goddesses spend most of their time regulating the balance between the three realms, heaven where the Jade Court resides, earth where the humans are and lastly hell, the demonic realm, where demons and spirits reside. There is a very fine balance between these three realms and the gods and goddesses of the Jade court spend a great deal of their time ensuring the balance is intact between all three. If, one is out of balance the universe itself becomes out of balance.

That said, being a deity is a lonely existence. Gods and goddesses spend a great deal of their looking down at the realm below. Love, lust, power, greed, many gods and goddesses see themselves as being above these base emotions. However, the gods and goddesses still seek companionship in some form, usually for friendship. Chui, as she is known was once a flute, a revered possession of the earth goddess Nuwa. She had a been a simple flute once, small, and made of bamboo but a beautiful one nonetheless. The female goddess, Nuwa (the goddess who had created humans in her image) gave her a human form. She wished to have a companion, a friend in the jade court that she could confide in.

Chui, once she was given life, was fascinated by the human realm. She found the Jade court rules and etiquette, the hierarchy of the Jade court stifling. She often spent a great deal of her time glancing down at the human realm from above, eager to see humans and their world she had heard so much about, but had never experienced. She found their objects fascinating, bowls, plates, the day and night markets she would often glance people strolling casually through. It was all so foreign to her. Night markets, and things like food were not needed in the godly realm; the gods and goddesses did not get hungry or thirsty. The very notion of being human was foreign to them. Even Nuwa who had created humans in her image only watched them from above and rarely entangled herself in the issues of the human world. She would provide help if a tragedy occurred in the human realm that required her assistance, but she largely left them to deal with their own issues themselves.

One day, after many days and many years of staring down at the human realm from above; Chui asked if she could wander down and experience the human realm for herself. Nuwa cautioned her against it, as once she wandered down, she would encounter the most vilest portions of humanity. She had only seen the good and never the bad, and Nuwa cautioned against trusting all humans, as many were quite evil. But, Chui was insistent so Nuwa sent her to the human realm with a word of caution. She was no longer in the safety and protection of the gods and would have to fend for herself. Still, she was a magical being and still, far stronger than the average human. Nuwa cautioned her against showing her true animal form as many humans would not understand and believe her to be a monster. Chui had been given three forms by Nuwa once she became human, that of her inanimate flute self, that of a young girl of 16 and lastly a green and gold dragon, her true form.

The dragon form was her most powerful form, but a form that Nuwa cautioned her against using. Humans feared what they could not understand and if they, believed her to be a demon; they would hunt her, and do everything in their power to destroy her. Nuwa also advised her to find a woman, a young monk that she stated would provide protection. The monk was pure, was beyond human pursuits and therefore, would be a safe companion for her to travel with. She gave instructions for Chui to find this monk and it was only after many weeks, many days of wandering the human realm that she finally found the monk.

The monk was part of a pugilistic sect, a leader in the sect, and quite versed in martial arts, but spent a great deal of her time sequestered in training. Chui realized that in order for her to survive in the human realm she would have to join the sect and so, she did. Her days were spent learning martial arts and hiding her true self from the rest of her sect, but the monk knew, had guessed upon meeting her that she was not of the human realm. Nevertheless, the monk guarded her from the scrutiny of others, and had her join the sect that she was a leader of so that she could be protected.

Chui had had her wish. She was in the human realm that she had so longed to see and was quite happy. Many years passed, hundreds of years, before the bubble of safety she experienced within the pugilistic sect was shattered. The monk had never let her leave the safety of the sect as she had feared that once other humans discovered that she was not human they would attempt to seek her out and destroy her. Death was foreign to her. Still, the monk that had taken her in was getting old and with age came death.

She had never experienced sorrow, never experienced sadness, and the feeling of both of those emotions at the monk's passing proved to be too much for her to bear. She asked Nuwa to take her back to the Jade Court. The gods and goddesses were immortal; they could not die. She would never again have to experience the sorrow that came with death. She herself was not human and therefore could never die as well. She no longer had a place among the humans for, she realized that while they would grow old and die around her she herself never would. She would remain alive forever and continue to watch them slowly die around her and, she could no longer bear having such an existence anymore. Nuwa, who had watched as Chui lived within the human realm for some two hundred years granted her wish. She had missed the young flute and longed for her friendship again.

Chui had changed and Nuwa knew that living so long within the human realm would change her. Still, Chui had realized with the monk that had raised her that she had no place within the human realm She could not understand death, could not understand the pain and sorrow that came with it. Yet, she knew that humans would always die; it was inevitable, but she had experienced emotions within the human realm and realized that her place was among the gods. Here, she could experience the best of humanity, and not know of the greed, the sadness, the sorrow of humanity and how they strived for immortality. Here, within the Jade Court, she was safe.

Still, even when she had returned to the Jade Court she remained fascinated with the human realm and every once in a while would revisit the human realm for short visits. She always brought back things with her, trinkets, food of the human realm that the godly realm did not have.

It was during her travels while living in the human realm that she came across a small injured bird. She named the bird Zhuzi and once she returned to the Jade court brought the bird back with her. Nuwa gave the bird immortality and she remained as a small companion for Chui for the rest of her days.

Note: The artwork between the two forms is pretty different, mostly because I was still hashing out design then but the second one is probably more accurate.
