'They'll never find the hidden King or his Castle,' Lord Licorice says sourly... 'for I have hidden them from sight so that all of Candy Land will be mine!' His heart is as hard as rock candy. Always gloomy, always grim, Lord Licorice lives very much alone, except for the few Bitter Chocolate Bats to keep him company!

----

They were all out of nightlights, and really, what villain is afraid of the dark?!
I keep bats around for heaven's sake! So I...bought a flashlight instead....

SWITCH TO LORD LICORICE'S PROFILE Happening upon Lord Licorice, is is obvious that he is a self-proclaimed ruler. Though he purposefully acts rudely and proudly confesses he is the one who kidnapped King Kandy, threatening to send his bats to cast a plague upon her house and all that she holds dear. Frostine is unperturbed. In an attempt to be polite, she calmly asks what sort of Candy Person is he, to which Lord Licorice does not take well. He is startled, and offended that the Queen does not know.

He proclaims that he is made of licorice, not only that but black licorice. Frostine, trying to remain unfazed, carefully states she does not know what licorice is, and has in fact never heard of it before. This confession shocks Lord Licorice, and he explains that licorice is a chewy and bitter candy that everyone hates. Frostine is incredulous, and asks how could candy be bitter? Lord Licorice is enraged at this, and tells her to come with him. He takes her up the castle steps to the very top, his bat roost, and presents his horde of bitter chocolate bats to. "Chocolate is sweet you say? No, not truly. Chocolate actually starts off as bitter, so there." He's petty about it an immature, but this leaves Frostine to muse aloud about the molasses swamp and how chocolate did happen to grow there. This causes Lord Licorice to get off topic, becoming delighted at her mention of molasses, which also holds some bitterness. He expresses his wish to travel there one day, and how it was too far to do so by himself. This leads Frostine to ask, if he is the Lord he says he is, where are his subjects, his people? To what does he actually rule over, other than a barren wasteland? Licorice points out that Frostine is yet again the foolish one, stating that a Licorice forest has been growing, one he hopes will spread throughout the entirety of Candy Land.

Frostine is unsure of this claim, but does not state her thoughts that the licorice trees she had seen earlier might only grow in bad quality soil. Instead she feels she could use a change of subject to her advantage, and promptly states that it is Tea Time, and that they should have tea together. Licorice is very confused by this, but after Frostine states it's a royal tradition, he reluctantly accepts her offer and sets up a table in his portrait room, full of his portraits. In truth he goes with it to follow the 'royal status quo' in an effort to actually confirm his title and right to rule his 'domain'. He also did not answer Frostine's question of whether there are licorice subjects or not (aside from bats) because he really is the only one of his kind. Frostine is also acutely aware of the lack of answer, and what has gone unsaid says it all.

At tea (which is really just hot chocolate, the only think the Lord could provide), Frostine asks why the Lord would like to take over Candy Land. She is already aware of his loneliness and solitude, but desires a more concrete answer. When Lord Licorice gets on to the topic of his motive, Frostine must really try not to laugh, for its truly ridiculous.

Apparently, what really set off his decision to take over Candy Land was none other than a slight from King Kandy himself. Lord Licorice recounts how he began written correspondence with King Kandy, insisting he be given a land to rule and a title because he wanted to be representative of any and all bitter candy subject in Candy Land. King Kandy of course denied this request, for who had ever heard of a bitter Candy Person? But Licorice was relentless in his letters, and eventually King Kandy promised to give him a castle for his birthday if his land could grow the materials needed to build it. Well, this promise was of course never intended to be fulfilled, for nothing could grow in such wretched soil...but eventually, Lord Licorice succeeded in just that. The sprouting of black licorice trees, and eventually the odd sweet red licorice trees had commenced, and the Lord eagerly wrote back to King Kandy saying the task had been fulfilled and that he would be delighted to have him visit on his birthday with builders in tow.

On the aforementioned day the Lord had hoped that with his new home would come a place to decorate for the party, but most unfortunately no one showed up, and at the end of the day no castle there was. Lord Licorice was ultimately heartbroken by this, and after constructing a very strongly worded letter to the King of his imminent betrayal, Lord Licorice declared himself void of any and all Candy Land laws and built the castle himself.

And so began his quest to dethrone the King (who was not at all trustworthy or reliable to keep his word, Lord Licorice said). That way, someone more fitting of kingly qualities (himself) would rightful rule the land that had rejected him.

As Lord Licorice told his story, the Queen was utterly silent through all of it. She did not recall her husband mentioning any sort of correspondence or promise, but why would this clearly distressed man lie about such a thing? Frostine requested proof of such letters, to which the Lord had kept, envelope and all, and carefully presented to her. There was the royal seal, stamped in wax.

Briefly wondering if they might have been foraged, Frostine said aloud that she would have to look for traces of Lord Licorice's letters in the Candy Castle as well, but for the moment she believed him.

In a small attempt at repairing the broken bond between their 'people', she produced the carrot cake from Gramma Nutt, and wished the Lord a Happy Birthday. Frostine agreed that if there were bitter Candy People out there, there is likely prejudice towards them and they should indeed have a representative. Lord Licorice was so touched by such an offering, he declared the two to be friends and they shared the cake together. He even had a little pack of candles he had bought for the previous occasion and agreed that after the candles had gone out and they had each finished a slice, he would let the King (who was currently locked up in his dungeon) go.
