That if you heard two barks from the Cu Sidhe, you better run for shelter. For on the third, you were about to die. That's the story you were always told, that's the story you knew. But the legends never told you how the Cu Sidhe came to be.

A long time ago, there was a young boy named Sean. He had a friend and they would go out and play in the woods together a lot. Their parents had warned them of the dangers of the forests, but the children paid them no heed. They played and taunted each other each day, going deeper and deeper into the forest.
"If I can make it to the meadow and back before you, I deserve a kiss." Sean claimed proudly as they walked toward the forest.
"Ew. I rather kiss a hog." The girl teased.
"Only if you beat me." Sean took off running before she could say a word, having her sprint after him.
"Come on slowpoke. Before the faeries come out and get us." He taunted as he touched the edge of the meadow and ran back.
He was surprised as he nearly collided with her, as she stood their frozen in place.
"What's wrong?" He looked down at her feet and his eyes widened with fear. A circle of mushrooms, a faerie circle. And the girl was trapped in it.
"I'll go get help." He was about to run when she grabbed his arm.
"Please stay, I'm scared..." As much as Sean wanted to leave to get some help, he stayed, hoping to calm her down long enough that he could figure out how to get her out of the trap.
"I'm sure they are out to lunch." He joked, trying to make her smile. Even a little bit.

Soon enough, a twig branch broke and a tall creature stepped out of the trees. He was regal, pointed features, too perfect to be human. His eyes were on the girl, causing her to freeze.
"So you walked into my trap child?" He mused, his voice musical.
Sean picked up a branch and handled it like a sword. "You leave her alone."
Sean knew he didn't stand a chance against an adult, let alone a mythical one. But he wasn't about to let his friend be carried off by one either. He put himself between her and the faerie, mustering all the courage he could give himself.
He wasn't expecting the strength behind the blow the faerie hit him with, causing him to collide with a sickening thud against a tree. His ears were ringing and his vision clouded.
"Sean!" Her voice seemed so far away that Sean couldn't muster the strength to even answer.
As his vision came back, he watched the faerie suck the life from her, turning younger and glowing more. Sean's eyes widen in horror and then turned red with rage. He picked up his stick again and tried to strike. He fell short as the faerie grabbed his throat and lifted him.
"What a nuisance... Maybe I should teach you a lesson about being Faery, boy." Sean screamed out in pain as a zap went through his body and he fell to the ground.
As the Faery finished his meal, Sean was transforming. His body convulsed as he stayed on four legs, green fur spreading everywhere on his body. His nails and fangs elongated as his body grew faster and bigger to fill in. He let out this sickening and almost deathly howl. What... did he... do to me...?
"I turned you into a Faery Dog, Cu Sidhe as people will know you. Your bays will be your calling when you are on the hunt. You'll always be collecting souls for us. Three warnings is all you can give people before you hunt for their souls at night, in this forest."
I would never...
"And you will bring those souls to the Faerie world, pulling yourself into the dark, cruel world the Fae live. And when we disappear, you'll be next." The Faery vanished, leaving the corpse of the girl to rot in the faerie circle and Sean to face the reality of becoming a Faery on his own.

Sean had no choice when he became the Cu Sidhe, and you can still hear him today, in the woods, warning people to get away. First two are warnings, the third one, he's already on the hunt for you, praying he doesn't catch souls for those who turned him into what he is.
