Jase and his partner got the call. It was an anonymous tip about a fugitive they had been tracking for months now. They’d almost given up on the case, but the bounty on the fugitive’s head, well... it was worth it. They didn’t know what the crime was that had been committed, but for that price, it must have been a doozy.

The tip suggested that they might find a vehicle of interest at a parking garage in the lower west side. Revving up the engine of their black SUV, they pulled out of the parking lot they had been idling in and made their way towards the underbelly of Centropolis. The sun had set by the time they arrived at the parking garage in question. Pulling out flashlights, they quietly moved into the building.

They worked their way down several levels to where the car had been reported. Now began the task of finding it amongst all of the other cars in the garage. They split up, Jase going right and his partner going left.

Three lanes back, he heard a whistle from his partner, one that indicated that he had found something. Jase couldn’t see his partner, but began to work his way in the direction of the whistle. He heard a rustling near him, and shone his flashlight into the shadows. Seeing nothing, he turned his attention back to his partner, who had come into view.

Before he could go any further, however, he heard a soft pock from the shadows, and saw his partner drop to the ground. He ran towards him, and saw the blood draining from a bullet wound. A quick pulse check told him that he was now on his own.

Another pock came from the shadows. He felt a small sting in his neck, and fell to the ground.

The world went black.

1st Loop

... And then a bright flash of light. The world slowly came into focus.

“I got a call about that fugitive while you were sleeping, Jasey,” said his partner. Jase nearly jumped out of his skin, since the last time he had seen his partner, he’d been lying dead on the cold concrete floor of the parking garage. “Suspicious car in a parking garage in the lower west side. I’ll drive, you’re looking a bit tired still, buddy.”

Still confused and disoriented, Jase nodded in agreement, and they started the drive to Centropolis. They pulled into the garage just after the sun set.

‘We were dead,’ he thought to himself. ‘Why are we living through this again?’

But he was slowly formulating a plan. As they entered the lower level of the garage, his partner signalled that they were to seperate. This time, however, instead of going right, Jase went straight ahead, straight to the dark shadows that he had seen the bullets come from. He wasn’t searching for the car this time, he was searching for his murderer.

He found nothing. And no one.

He heard the whistle from his partner, and as he turned he heard the same pock as before. This time, it came from a different direction. Cursing, he ran towards his partner, and heard another pock. He felt the same sting, this time in his chest.

‘How did they know?’ he asked himself, as the world went black for a second time.

2nd Loop

... And then another bright flash of light. The world slowly came into focus.

“I got a call about that fugitive while you were sleeping, Jasey,” said his partner. “Suspicious car in a parking garage in the lower west side. I’ll drive, you’re looking a bit tired still, buddy.”

Jase was unnerved. Could it be a dream? Would a dream be this vivid? He’d felt his blood pulsing out of the gunshot wound, he’d felt his heart slowing as he’d faded. It all seemed so real.

They arrived at the parking garage.

Quickly trying to think, Jase said, “hey man, I’ve got a bad feeling about this one, can we just hang out here for a little bit?”

His partner gave him a strange look. Probably thought Jase was losing his nerve. Well, as long as they didn’t both get murdered he could think whatever he wanted.

And so they waited. Jase sighed in relief when he realized they had passed the time of the murders. He went to open his car door but suddenly heard the familiar pock. His partner slumped over the steering wheel.

Jase scrambled out of the car, trying to get a look at the killer. All he saw before he felt the pinch of the bullet was a black coated figure ducking behind a van.

3rd Loop

... And then another bright flash of light. The world slowly came into focus.

“I got a call about that fugitive while you were sleeping, Jasey,” said his partner. “Suspicious car in a parking garage in the lower west side. I’ll drive, you’re looking a bit tired still, buddy.”

“I think we should skip this one, my friend,” Jase replied. His partner raised an eyebrow at him. Jase wasn’t one to turn down large bounties. “I just have a bad feeling about it. Let’s go grab some burgers instead.”

His partner shrugged and started up the SUV. They drove to a local joint, grabbed a burger from the drive-through and parked in the dark parking lot to chow down.

An hour passed, and Jase was convinced that this time they had escaped. They left the parking lot, heading home. As they drove through a green light, he heard the screech of tires, and turned to look out the window.

The car they had examined in the garage was hurtling towards them. And it wasn’t slowing down. Before either of them could react, the car slammed into them.

Jase’s partner again slumped over the steering wheel. Jase couldn’t feel his body. He began the now-familiar fade out as he saw the fugitive fleeing the wreck, clearly still in one piece.

4th Loop

... And then another bright flash of light. The world slowly came into focus.

“I got a call about that fugitive while you were sleeping, Jasey,” said his partner. “Suspicious car in a parking garage in the lower west side. I’ll drive, you’re looking a bit tired still, buddy.”

Aww, not again.

“Y’know what, man?” he said, “let’s just go grab a beer. I got a bad feeling about this one.”

As they hazily staggered out of the bar hours later, he saw the same car driving at them. Guess that was that.

10th Loop

“I though you might be losing it Jasey, but I didn’t realize it was that bad,” said his partner. Jase had tried telling him about the murders and the looping timeline. His partner wasn’t buying it. They were sitting outside the parking garage.

“You know what? It’s fine. I’ll go in alone.”

Jase tried to protest, but his partner was having none of it. He left Jase alone to wait. After he didn’t return, Jase knew what had happened, and waited as the car came flying out of the garage straight into the SUV.

20th Loop

“I dunno Jasey, that sounds pretty rough. Are you sure you’ve been sleeping alright?” his partner asked. Jase nodded his assent, and his partner slumped back in his seat. “And you’ve never seen the guy? Haven’t seen his face?” Jase shook his head.

As the drove to the garage, they formulated a plan. They would spread out, and with both of them searching perhaps they could shoot first.

It didn’t work.

45th Loop

They’d swept every corner of the garage. They couldn’t find a trace of the fugitive. It was like the fugitive was always a step ahead.

100th Loop

Dying is getting real old now.

220th Loop

Jase’s partner whistles from the other side of the garage. Jase runs over, expecting the now-familiar pock. It never comes.

Jase turns the corner and sees his partner with a gun trained on a black-coated figure. Could this be it?

“He’s hiding under the cars, Jasey,” his partner comments casually. “He’s fast, but he wasn’t fast enough this time.”

Jase pulled back the hood the fugitive wore, finally looking at the face of his murderer. It was a surprisingly average face, there was nothing special to it at all. Except that it was twisted into an evil smirk.

“You think you’ve got me?” it whispered. “You’ve tried more than two hundred times, what makes you think you’re gonna get out of it now? Just because you have a gun?”

With that, the fugitive pulled a small knife from it’s sleeve. It whirled around at such a speed that Jase barely felt the knife slashing him.

563th Loop

Jase had lost count of how many times he had died. He knew it was a lot. He had died so many ways: shootings, stabbings, car wrecks, fire, explosions, and one memorable time freezing in a walk in refrigerator at a restaurant. He’d caught the fugitive a handful of times. He’d been taunted, the fugitive knew too much about the time loops.

He was at his wits end.

He and his partner combed the garage as they usually did. But this time, the fugitive made a mistake. Jase heard a rustling from under a car near him. Sighing, Jase cocked his gun, ducked under the nearest car and opened fire.

Once he’d unloaded his clip, he listened. He heard laboured breathing near him. Had he done it? He carefully crawled towards the breathing.

Then he saw it. The black jacket was glistening with blood. The fugitive’s chest was barely rising, and slowly at that. But Jase didn’t get any closer. He’d learned not to trust this guy.

When the breathing stopped and Jase had given it a little extra time just to be sure, he crawled over to the body. He pulled back the hood to show the familiar face, but instead of the typical smirk, it only showed surprise. The fugitive hadn’t expected this.

Jase and his partner called in a report. The bounty would be theirs once the identity was confirmed. Jase sighed. He didn’t know for sure that this would end the loops, but he could only hope.

Once he’d returned home, he locked the door to his small bedroom and flopped onto the bed. He was asleep almost immediately.

He would know in the morning whether the loops would continue or not.
