Maybe a flicker in your periphery—petals shivering without wind, a shimmer between bark and moss….but never me. That’s how I like it.I move when the dew still clings to spider silk, when the sun hasn’t yet dared to breathe on the forest floor. My skin is bark-soft, my hair full of tiny blossoms that bloom and die with the moon’s cycle. The beetles and crickets nestle there, whispering secrets in click-song and wing-vibration.Today, a boot crashes too close. A child stomping, net in hand, eyes wild with excitement. He doesn’t see the thread-thin web he just destroyed, nor the little green snake he frightened into the thorns.But I do.I hum a tune only earthworms hear, and the moss thickens under his feet—slowing, snagging. His net falls, forgotten. A cloud of gnats swarms him gently, just enough to turn his interest away. He runs off, leaving only the echo of his laughter.I lift the broken web, gently setting it between two stems, weaving light back through its silken strands. The spider crawls into my palm, legs like whispers, and I smile. A daisy blooms beside us, just for her.They call me strange, those who still believe. “Wood ghost,” they mutter, or “flower shade.” But I am no ghost. I am root-deep and leaf-lit. I am protector of the small, the crawly, the overlooked.You won’t find me. Not unless you listen very, very closely to the hush of petals closing for the night.
