The demand for ivory has pushed elephants to the brink of extinction.

The tagua nut, also known as "vegetable ivory," is the fruit from the Ivory Nut palm, a tropical tree that is native to the Amazon Basin of Bolivia, Peru, and Ecuador.

It is an excellent alternative to elephant ivory because it has many similar physical properties and is essentially indistinguishable. It is extremely hard and dense when dried, and it can be carved, stained, and polished.

A single female tree may produce as much as 50 pounds of nuts each year- roughly the amount of ivory in an average African elephant tusk.

The only downside is the size; each nut is only 2 inches (5 cm) on average, which limits what can be made from them. They are most commonly carved into buttons, dice, chess pieces, and art.
