The house had stood abandoned for so long now that nobody could even fully remember the previous tenants. Not that anybody had ever made a lasting impression anyways; hardly any had managed to stay more than a few months. One day, a moving truck appeared in front of the house, and began to unload the new familys belongings. Rylin pulled up behind the truck and admired her brand new house. Sure, it needed some work but mostly just cosmetic and hey, for the price, it was a steal. Rylin was glad all that overtime at work had finally paid off.

Rylin came to stand in front of the upstairs closet. She swore thats where she told the movers to put the boxes that held her grandmas antique china, but the closet was empty. She slammed the door shut and cursed even bothering to hire them. They had been nothing but trouble from the start. She figured she would find the china soon enough after she started unpacking. The days went by and Rylin had just finished unpacking the last box. It wasnt the china. She decided to check the upstairs closet again where she had told the movers to put those boxes in the first place. She opened the door, but the boxes still werent there. Instead of the closet being empty as before, there was a ball lying on the floor. Thats odd, she thought. That ball definitely wasnt there before, I would have seen it lying right in the middle of the closet. After some further thought she brushed it off, she was in such a rush that day she could have easily overlooked it. She shut the door and continued about her day.

A reading nook. Thats what Rylin was going to turn that upstairs closet into. She didnt actually need the closet as storage since the downstairs already had two. One weekend, she decided she would tackle the job. She had all the needed supplies: paint, shelving boards and plenty of fabric and stuffing to make pillows with. The first thing to do was to remove the door. It was an older house so the door was actually wood and quite heavy but after some grease work, she was able to pry the door off its hinges and carry it down to the basement. She spent the rest of the day painting and installing the shelves and then called it a day. She would finish the rest tomorrow.

Rylin woke up the next day ready to finish her cozy reading nook, but when she stepped out of her bedroom, she couldnt believe what she saw. The door was back on the closet hinges attached and everything. Rylin swung open the door. All the shelves she put up yesterday were gone and there was not a drop paint anywhere to be seen. A very confused Rylin shut the door and went downstairs to fix some coffee while she thought about who could be playing this lame prank on her.

While sipping on her coffee she heard a loud thump upstairs. She took the stairs two at a time, coming to a stop in front of the now open door of the reading nook. A small black cat hissed and arched his back, scooting across the floor to send a can of paint flying. Rylin chased the mysterious cat all through the house, groaning as he left a trail of destruction through her house. Though Rylin had a number of windows wide open, he made no attempt to escape. She chased him through every room of the house until her face was red and she was out of breath. He finally came to a stop in the center of the closet. There was a smugness in the twitch of his tail tip as he sauntered into the closet. She made a dash for the cat, convinced she had him pinned at last. The closet wasnt very large, after all. As her fingers came to a close around him a large gust of wind sent the door slamming shut.

Everything seemed to dissolve along with the walls around her. The world had gone dark and she could not even sense the cat anymore. She tried to hold her hand up in front of her face but could not even see her fingers. She looked back over her shoulder, hoping to see ribbons of light shining around the edges of a closet door. There was nothing but darkness and emptiness and Rylin had no idea how to get back home.
