Eventually, after too many knights vanishing, the neighboring kingdom sought to eradicate the dragon. An army was raised to slay the beast.
It is written that they slew the dragon, but some witnesses say they saw it fly away after setting fire to the area. Tales continued to spread of a slumbering lizard in a crumbling castle high on a mountain."
The child stopping reading the book in their hands, captivated by the idea a dragon could still roam the world. But finding out it was true was easier said than done. This required dedication, more books, and a good snack.
Luckily the child was already inside the largest library in the kingdom, even if it was a little small, it did have a secret section for the determined and the well acquainted. The librarian was friendly enough, and allowed them to read any book they wanted, even the ones in the back room that held the rarest books.
It took the child weeks to finally find the right books with lore and tales of dragons. And more specifically the one that may be close by. The town elders would talk of a great lizard that watched over the town and blessed them with fertile harvests and rain. Once a year they even celebrate the coming of autumn by lighting a giant wooden lizard on fire and have a feast from the newly harvested crops. But every time the child asked why and when this custom started all answers they got were 'since forever' and 'it's been like this for generations'. Which when trying to find a dragon, wasn't very helpful.
Frustrated the child went back to the library to find books about the customs of the town, when the librarian stopped them to hand them a book, smiled, and left. It was one the child had never seen before. Tiny and very plain looking, the title reading "Tales of the Fire Lizard". It was written by a famous travelling bard.
In this book, it is said that a great dragon fled the army by creating a wall of smoke to hide it's retreat. It then traveled the lands until it came across a small town near an old mountain castle. The people there did not fear him, they did not think the dragon a monster there only to destroy their homes. Instead they called him magnificent, and found a home to slumber in what was now a crumbling castle.
The child knew this castle well, they saw it everyday. Yet no one actually traveled up to it. Elders claimed it was cursed ground, and full of ghosts of the dead.
It took the child half a day to travel up the mountain to the crumbling castle, their parents otherwise occupied with festival preparations. Ghosts or no ghosts, they were going to find out what lived here, even if it meant finding nothing.
The child was surprised at how much of the castle still stood. Much of the upper levels were mostly gone, as well as living quarters. But the great hall was still intact, its columns of stone hardly marred. And there, sleeping around the throne, was a dragon. The child's face blanched and they gasped with awe and fear. After so long hiding here, they had no idea if the dragon would even like having humans around. It was pointless to turn back now, there was only one action to take.
Once close enough, the child meekly tried rousing the dragon from their slumber. "H-hello?" Nothing. Another step closer, a little louder. "Mister d-dragon?"
If the child hadn't covered their mouth, they would have shrieked in surprise, for the dragon started shifting. This was it. They were going to meet a dragon. Watching with fascination, the dragon uncurled itself from around the old throne, its scales reflecting the light making it look like it was covered in fire. It sniffed the air, then stared down at the child with cool, curious eyes.
"It has been a while since anyone has come to visit me. What brings you so far from your village tiny one?" Its voice was surprisingly mellow, but still reverberated through the child's bones.
"I- I...." Their mouth hung open, dumbfounded at what to say. "I c-came to find out if you were truly real."
The dragon might have grinned if it were possible. "As you can see. I am indeed real. Is that all you wanted?"
"N-no! I also wanted to know about you. About how you got here. I-I like to read stories and found out about you in a book," The child sheepishly took a book from their backpack to show the dragon. "But there isn't much. I was wonder if... you'd tell me?"
The dragon hummed, considering the child's request. "Perhaps. It is a very long story, one that cannot be told in one day." The excitement was very apparent on the child's face. It amused the dragon.
"I'll come! I will come all the time to listen!" Excited, they dug around in their bag to pull out a sweet wrapped in paper. "I brought you something. Its a sweet cake my mother made," But when they saw that it was much too tiny for the massive dragon, they frowned. "It's a little small for you, but..."
A low rumble could be heard coming from the dragon. Almost like a laugh. "I appreciate the gesture, I'm sure it will taste delicious." Their small face lit up, happy the dragon liked the sweet.
"I want to stay and hear your story, but my mommy wants me home by sundown so we can take part in the festival. Can I come tomorrow and visit?" They wanted to stay so badly, but the child feared their mothers anger much more than and angry dragon that might eat them. So they hoped the dragon wasn't offended.
Shaking it's head, the dragon shooed the child away. "Come tomorrow, or the next day. Time fazes me little."
Quickly getting their bag, they ran out of the castle. But in their haste, they forgot to ask one important question. "Oh! I forgot to ask. Do you have a name?"
It had been a very, very long time since the dragon had even thought about a name. "Hmmm. Once, a kingdom would shout the same word every time they saw me. Perhaps it is a name, perhaps not. Call me Ignus."
The child kept visiting the dragon every few days. Then once a week. Once a month. Then eventually, when the child was not a child any longer, they visited the dragon once every year to hear the fascinating tales. And the dragon enjoyed every visit.
