Characteristics of a Lyrikit

Physical

• Their body shape can vary between individuals and subspecies but they are generally lean and muscular, with a top-heavy appearance being common overall. They have long, sturdy forelimbs, with their joints being capable of a range of motion well equipped for climbing and moving about, as well as a long, fully prehensile tail. Their necks can range from long to medium in length, and with the assistance of their neck fur can appear shorter or longer depending on how far they are extended (see: birds)

• They can be approx 2' to 3' high at the shoulder and size varies between both individuals and subspecies; Alpine lyrs are generally larger and taller, and true tusked lyrs can be generally shorter, but not always, etc.

• Their movement is very similar to that of lemurs and new world monkeys.

• Their faces have a bird-like, dromaeosaurid appearance, with a beaked upper lip, slightly forward facing eyes and a tuft of fur atop the snout. The beakish appearance of the mouth is the result of cartilage, and can be pulled back and moved about, with a limited range of movement.

• They are generally covered in soft fur from head to tail with the face, throat, hands and feet being hairless, as well as a rough, hairless area towards the tip of the tail for grip. Their coats come in many colors, patterns and thickness, often depending on the climate of where the individual comes from.

• Their snout features an acoustic chamber designed for enhanced vocalization, with a "blowhole" located atop the snout and an opening at the back of the throat to draw air into and force out through the top. Their "speech" uses a combination of sound from both the chamber and vocal cords.

Vocals

• They have an incredibly wide vocal range consisting of growls, chatters, chirps, honks and screeches, as well as developing specialized calls for a variety of events such as alerting to predators, locating other individuals, and scaring/manipulating prey.

• A group of Lyrs may often get together and howl and carry on for bonding purposes or for no reason, for the most part they will use their acoustic chamber for this and the result can be quite terrifying for other species who hear their cries and don't know what they are. (Alpines are renowned for their cries being particularly haunting as their larger chambers and size allow them to produce deeper howls; it can pretty much sound like wind howling through a doorway during a storm except like, 10 doorways all at once if there's a group of them.)

• They possess a crop, used to store food as well as feed young; both sexes are capable of producing crop milk, and they do not lactate.

• They are oviparous and may lay up to 3 eggs at a time (4 or 5 are uncommon, but not unheard of). Any family or group members may help take care of the clutch, with the mother's approval. There is generally little pressure to pair off and breed, and choosing to do so is a personal decision by both participants, much like humans.

• They have a possible lifespan of up to 90 years, but are often shorter lived due to predators, disease, injury and environmental influence.

Behavioral

• They are an intelligent, highly social species with bonds formed on mutual trust and empathy, and the respect and acceptance of others runs deep in their culture; although they are also highly individualistic.

• Their family groups may be as small as 3 members or as large as 20; the word "family" is used loosely to refer to both blood relation and platonic bonds.

• Despite their amicable nature, physical combat is often used to settle disagreements and establish boundaries, though is rarely severe enough to result in serious injury.

• They are omnivorous, with diet varying greatly between individuals and subspecies; some subspecies are physically more equipped for the hunting or gathering of specific foods, eg. Fish, fruits and insects found underground.

• They are naturally cathemeral, but some families, groups or individuals may adopt a nocturnal or diurnal lifestyle for simplicity.

Lyrikit Subspecies Characteristics

Common

✦ Your "standard" Lyrikit.

✦ Lean with minimal fluff (often found around the back of the head, front of the neck, chest, forearms and haunches).

✦ Long tail, often covered in plush, even fur, giving it a very thick appearance.

✦ Long neck.

✦ Lyrikit have a general reputation among other creatures for being noisy, active and kind of silly things; this is not true for all individuals, but if any sort of Lyr is true to this reputation it would be probably be one of these guys.

True Tusked

✦ A True Tusked Lyr has a stockier body type as well as a completely naked face (no snout fluff) and of course, tusks

✦ Thick, strong cervical vertebrae and a shorter neck.

✦ Forearms are slightly larger and more powerful; often tusked Lyrs will burrow and dig for food and shelter.

✦ Known to be more aggressive and more willing to fight, and many things are settled by butting heads and locking tusks amongst this subspecies.

✦ Tails are often shorter with less fur.

✧ Note that other Lyr may be labelled as tusked for the possession of them, but if they have only tusks and are of a different body type, they are not the true tusked type.

Alpine

✦ Most noticeable is the head shape, which has a sloped appearance, and the pattern of their snout fluff often accentuates the shape.

✦ Their snouts contain a larger acoustic chamber than other subspecies; as a result they are known for incredibly deep, loud and sometimes haunting calls, as well as a general reputation for being incredibly noisy, even by Lyr standards.

✦ Long, slender legs with thick, fluffy fur on the forearms and back legs.

✦ Less muscular than others with a more dainty, regal appearance.

✦ Tail is thinner and may be tufted with thicker fur towards the end.
