Enola's Journal:

July 14, 1945

The temps were cooler than usual today. It felt wonderful after weeks and weeks of sweltering in the heat. Air conditioning has already been invented, but you wouldn’t know it walking around here. Keiko and I met again for our long-standing daily brunch date. She always keeps me up to date on the latest gossip, which is often as entertaining as it is useful for my job. A historian never stops learning, that’s for sure.

Keiko has been dropping hints that she wants to move out of the country for a while now. Months, at least. Every time she makes one of those jokes I ask her where she’d like to move and she never commits to any particular place. Maybe she’s just tired of the war. Everyone is, not that they would let that on. They’re such a respectful and stoic people. You have to learn to look between the lines to see how they’re really feeling. Either way, I’m so tempted to encourage when she talks about leaving. She’s a good girl. She doesn’t deserve what’s coming. None of them do.

July 29, 1945

An acquaintance lost her husband today. The war has already had such a high body count for this country, the reaction from everyone else to this latest tragedy is not to mourn, but to console and move on. They have to, if they want to keep going. Children still need fed, clothes still need washed, and daily life doesn’t have time to give one more grieving widow the reverence she deserves. I knew this would be a hard assignment. I’d studied every aspect of this period of history and knew every bit of minutiae that would allow me to blend in among the locals, but nothing prepares you emotionally for living it, for walking these streets knowing what will happen here so shortly. It makes me want to run around telling people, warning them and telling them to get out. But that would cost me my job or worse, so I say nothing.

Keiko mentioned going away on holiday again. Her smile slipped when she said it and I knew she wasn’t joking this time. She implored me to go with her. “Just for a while,” she said, “I know a man who would let us go with him on his boat. He’s heading to China. It could be fun.” I could see in her eyes that fun had nothing to do with it. She was scared. I wondered, not for the first time, how she knew whatever it was she knew, but wasn’t telling me. She is always so free with gossip, but never anything deeper. It makes me realize how little I know about her at all. I looked her up shortly after meeting her, but I hadn’t found anything interesting. Maybe I’ll try and dig a little deeper as we get closer. Just in case.

I finally got around to looking a little further into Keiko’s background. Everything seems normal and boring. A little too normal and boring. Maybe I’m just being paranoid, but then again, it pays to be paranoid when you’re in my line of work. She asked again today if I wanted to leave with her to go to China. She was very insistent, which also makes me wonder. She’s so firmly planted in her social circle here, why does she want to leave so badly, and why now? There could be any number of reasons, but if there’s anything I’ve learned in my studies it’s that there’s no such thing as convenient coincidences.

August 5, 1945

Keiko came to my house this morning, distraught and crying and trying to physically drag me with her to China. I kept asking her what was wrong, and why we needed to leave, but she broke down in sobs and eventually left without further explanation. My suspicions are even stronger now, but it’s too late to worry about that now. My assignment finishes this afternoon and I have to put some last minute things in place before extraction.

Everything went off without a hitch. History repeated as it always has, and I made it back without anything out of place. The only surprise came as a literal footnote when I was tidying up the necessary documents for my final report. Under the list of field operatives for my time period was a name that had been crossed out on the original list and omitted from all future copies:

Destination 1945 Hiroshima, Japan:
Rin Tanaka, alias Keiko Nakamura
Terminated for desertion
