little hope
loudly sounding siren
if you want
your dream of life back
little hope, little hope
sing a song of fire

(I’ve seen the truth and it’s nothing like you said
I’ve seen the picture of your perfect world
Now you can touch the halo around my crowned head
So many questions, so many things unsaid)

The Mandragora
Rare and elusive plantlike humanoids. Long living, thought to be immortal by humans. It is said in folklore that those lucky enough to hear the song of a mandragora will be granted some manner of riches; gold, love, fertility, eternal youth. It varies from culture to culture, city to town. Their numbers are few, being slow to reproduce in the first place, and suffering thanks to hunting and destruction of their homelands.

Humans, dwarves, and elves alike all seek to hunt and capture a mandragora of their own. Greed does not discriminate; it consumes us all.

Mandragoras have little sexual dimorphism. They are all slender, ethereally beautiful feyfolk. Female mandragoras do not have breasts, as they do not feed their young. They give birth to seedlings, whom then burrow into the soil for years to grow strong. If removed from the ground before they are ready, they will scream, a wretched sound that supposedly curses whomever hears it.

The Deadly Ballad - Folklore
Being as elusive as they are, most creatures in this world have never seen a mandragora in person. As with all rare creatures, they have become the focus of many fables and centuries of folklore across the seas.

Depending on who you ask, mandragoras can be coveted or reviled. Some villages deep in the woods tell tales of the creatures hiding in the soil, fooling unsuspecting travelers into believing they are turnips or other delicious root vegetables. When they are pulled from the ground, they then unleash a haunting, deafening scream, one that will curse the unfortunate victim forever; other, more sinister tales insist that the shriek can cause instant death.

More commonly, townspeople murmur excitedly about the elusive mandragora, who live deep in the mountain forests, far away from humans. They whisper about the mandragora's song which, if heard by anyone lucky enough to find one, will grant them riches far beyond their wildest dreams.

But what is the reality?

Mandragoras are, indeed, capable of both cursing and blessing other creatures, but it is not so simple. The scream a mandragora child emits when uprooted from the soil is a ghastly sound, one that could potentially deafen an unsuspecting human, but the shriek itself is not a curse, nor would an unlucky farmer keel over dead from the sound of it. Rather, imagine if you were rudely awakened from a comfortable slumber by someone pulling ruthlessly at your hair; surely you, too, would scream! Mandragoras simply have powerful lungs, much more so than your average human.

Being feyfolk, they have a love of song. All mandragoras have lovely, serene voices; a chorus of mandragoras is truly a magical sound. Not every song the creatures sing is a blessing, but they are mystical beings, and are capable of powerful magic.

trying to decide if they should be tied in with Fable or not. given folklore, it makes sense, but the kind of character I want them to be is not really fitting to the story. Fable isn't particularly dark and doesn't deal at all with human sexuality and they do so I don't think I'll end up going down that line

regardless, they're worshipped as some kind of idol of good luck and fortune (also fertility) by a select few. however, mythos also says that their voice (just a scream, true to actual folklore?) can send you to hell if you do wrong by them. their mouth ends up being physically sewn shut by a group of fortune seeking demons and kept in a cellar. not a pleasant story. gotta think more on it. original thought was that it was Fedlimid keeping them to use as he saw fit for his own selfish desires but again I don't think it really suits the theme of the story.

anyway everything on Subeta will be kept PG-13 okay never fear
