June 6, 1944 of this year marked the 76th anniversary of the Battle of Normandy, more commonly known as D-Day.
The Battle of Normandy was a battle that took place during World War II from June 6, 1944-August 30, 1944. It was one of the largest amphibious assaults in military history with 156,115 American, British, and Canadian soldiers involved in the battle. The battle, in which various forces, naval, ground, and aerial, were spread out over a 50 mile stretch of five different beaches in Normandy, resulted in the Allied liberation of Western Europe from Nazi Germany.
Of the total number of troops involved in the battle, known under the codename Operation Overlord, 73,000 were American, 61,715 were British, and 21,400 were Canadian; 23,000 of the total troops were airborne troops. They spread out over 5 beaches in Normandy, France with, the American troops spreading out over the Omaha and Utah beaches, the British spreading out over the Gold and Sword beaches, and the Canadians, who had the smallest amount of forces spreading out over Juno beach.
