They were old.

Cian didn't know how old. They had always been in the world, as far as they could tell. It didn't matter, anyway. At first, they had kept to themself, away from everyone else. A few times they had ventured into more crowded areas but never for long. It wasn't the noise or the commotion, it was how most people never saw them or never saw them for what they really were. Cian knew but no one else seemed to. For every child or kind woman who fed them, there was someone just as willing to throw a rock or aim a kick at them.

Until Branwen.

What it was about her, that was different, Cian didn't know that either. But she was so kind and they were so old and she spoke to them as if she knew without a doubt they could understand even if Cian didn't let on.

So they stayed and slowly became part of the world again. It felt as if the years had washed away, as if they had been reborn.
