Deep in the briny depths a creature lurks, flitting just in the corner of the eye- as quick as a flash and as nimble as can be, you'll have to be alert to spot it...
Divers tell tales of a dark, small shape darting across their vision as they swim between great coral growths- some say they feel a light pinch, or a sharp scratch against their legs as they pass on by, but most explain it away as a trick of the dim light.
Those who do manage to catch a glimpse all say the same, that it swims like in a graceful, weightless manner and blends in perfectly against its surroundings- and that it is no fish, nor anything one would expect in the oceanic depths.

Such an idea seems a frightening one indeed, afterall when we talk of unknown creatures they are rarely gentle, kind beings- no, they are most often monsters and malevolent demons, acts against nature itself!
When a village starts to notice their flocks going astray and the nights become filled with godless shrieking, they rarely expect the culprit to be the sort one would like to encounter- when a ghostly shape shows up on a CCTV monitor late at night, nobody rushes to invite it in out of the cold.

But this creature is not to be feared, nor anything particularly frightening or mystical- once it is understood it seems hardly menacing at all, just like many of the peculiar creatures of our world.
To see clearly what this mysterious, ocean dwelling being is one must learn of it's past- of how it came to be and what it once was, for that is where it's secrets lie....

A person's first pet can be a wondrous thing, a bond shared for many years- a first pet can be a best friend, a companion through thick and thin, even a part of the family.
I'm sure many hold such fond memories of that first animal companion and they joy they bought, along with their lessons of responsibility and compassion for the younger of us- but not every first pet is lucky enough to experience such a wonderful moment of connection, some are paired with those who's interest will wane and dry up far too quick.
Our oceanic mystery was one such pet.
Long before coming to settle deep beneath the waves, this creature was a simple mantis- nothing special or magical, just a small but beautiful insect residing in a jar on a desktop.
It could've been a satisfactory life, the jar was fairly nice as far as jars go, with leaves and twigs to climb and a steady supply of small flies to eat- but luxury was to be short lived.
You see, the mantis may have been beautiful to look at at first but.....
you can't play fetch with a mantis, or teach it tricks- you can't walk it or pet it, and it doesn't really show great affection.
At the end of the day a mantis is not a dog, and as pretty and as interesting such a pretty creature is...
For someone who had desperately wanted a dog- it wasn't exactly what was desired.

The mantis of course had no idea, for a small bug there's not much more to life other than eating and watching those strange, gigantic shapes move outside of glass confines- there was no deep thought about the future nor concern as to why that huge face no longer peered in, there were small flies to catch and leaves to climb and that was that.
Well, that was that until the Darkness.
Now, to a human like us putting a jar into a rucksack is hardly frightening, but to a small, defenseless creature residing in said jar?
It may as well be as if the sun has gone out- which is exactly what the mantis thought.
To the small, disorientated and scared creature a practically apocalyptic event was happening, all light had been lost in the Darkness- the only world the insect could know was now pitch black as a great earthquake shook it to it's core, as it was carried far away!
It seemed like an age as the mantis hid away, shivering beneath a leaf and hoping the world world return to normal soon- unable to see that it was now far, far from anywhere it had ever known, and that it would never see 'home' again.

When light finally did stream back in it was from a very different place than before, this was no desk in a bedroom- but the edge of a seaside cliff, a bitter wind blowing harshly through this seemingly alien world.
Of course a beach cliff is no place for a tiny, tiny mantis and the owner of the jar knew that quite well- but the owner of the jar also had no intention of leaving the mantis here.

It is at this point that it becomes apparent that this is not just a first pet becoming boring, as losing interest is hardly nefarious in any way- it's a fact of life sometimes, not everything holds it's illustrious glimmer forever and humans attention fades.
But that is not what had happened here, no- as the jar was lifted up and swung back against the wind it was clear the mantis had not been brought to someone else to take care of, nor released into the wild....
As the jar began to move swiftly forward, tumbling over the edge of the cliff it was abundantly obvious that the frightened, lost and confused mantis was no less disposable than a cheap piece of tissue to it's owner- that to the one who had fed and cared for it for as long as it could it meant nothing.
As the mantis plummeted down towards the violent, dark waves it was clear the one who should've been it's caretaker had a cold, cold heart...

The jar plunged into icy saltwater with a splash, sending it's inhabitant scurrying in a panic as the airholes high above began to fill the glass prison- the small insect floundering, unable to swim or escape!
It was a terror none could begin to understand, to find your entire world suddenly becoming a death trap with no way out- all the poor mantis could do was cling to a twig and float, hoping to be saved.
If the bug could've cried out it would have screamed and screamed and screamed, if it had the strength it would have broken it's prisons lid off and freed itself- but it could do neither, all it could do was feel terribly, terribly afraid.

As the last free space in the jar began to fill something most peculiar began to happen, a strange turquoise glow over took the mantis and, as it's head went underwater, it found itself mysteriously able to breath!
Every inch of it's tiny body began to tingle, it's bright green colours dimming to brown as its very physiology changed- it's abdomen blossomed into a shrimp-like tail, gills forming along it's body and it's carapace thickening and gaining strange, barnacles along it's form.
Not only did it change in such impossible ways, but it began to grow too- soon large enough to smash the glass around it and swim away, bursting into the open ocean with a great euphoria and sense of freedom!
The mantis was a mantis no more, now a creature of the sea- strong and fast and no longer afraid, for the first time it felt a rush of joy!
The jar had been all it had ever known, it had never wished for more- but this! This wide, untamed land that stretched further than the eye!
This was it's domain now, it's world to explore- a gigantic realm of water filled with creatures and places it had never known before, with no walls nor malicious caretakers to harm it.

But that wasn't all, as the mantis had metamorphosed so had it's thoughts- it's head had suddenly been filled with things and knowledge and words, the whisperings of a world previously unknown.
It somehow knew that this was no act of nature, that someone had saved it- even if it hadn't seen it, it could feel it.
The mantis could feel this beings presence within it, bringing it something else new- a sense of purpose.
Without words the mantis knew what it had to do, what it's debt was for this life saving magic- it had to become a guardian of the sea, helping others lost to the briny waves survive.
Those that could be saved it would lead to shore, untangling divers from coral and leading the lost from great depths to safety- those that could not be saved would be transformed too, becoming creatures of the sea just like the mantis and living a new life.
This was the mantis's new lifes work, it's mission and purpose- and that is why despite the fear and mystery that surrounds it, it is nothing to fear.
In fact, it's presence is quite the opposite- the mantis is a guardian and savior of all who become lost to the sea, afterall every diver who's seen it out the corner of their eye has returned to shore safely, no matter how treacherous their journey has been....
