"Hey dude pass the Xotl, you're hogging it!" whined the hoodlum formally known as Steven. He and his friends had picked one of the colorful creatures up from their dealer. They'd heard the toxins from an Xotl were the strongest hallucinogens on the market. It didn't hurt that the toxin tasted like sour candy. Steven licked the poor purple amphibian and passed it to his best friend, Kyle. Kyle happily licked the Xotl, then passed him on.

Dude," muttered another hooligan, William, "Since we're all licking the same thing is that gay?" Steven and Kyle looked at each other like William had just spoken Latin. "Uhhhh... No. It's only gay... If you're not... Wearing socks..." replied Kyle wisely before he turned to laugh at his own hand. William shrugged and took his second lick of the sour toxin before plopping the Xotl in the cardboard box that had become its new home.

The trio started to fall into a mutual euphoria as the toxins started to take full effect. The room swirled into a blissful array of color and sound. Color intermingling with emotion intermingling with color again. The floor was made of beans. Beans? No, worms. Squirming, pulsating, vibrating worms of every color in existence. The worms became grass and the air carried the sweet scent of Granny Hetter's snickerdoodles. Only they were literal snickerdoodles, laughing, laughing so loudly. Raucous guffaws that sounded... green. Is green a sound? No. But is it simply a color? No. Where are the worms? The worms were our friends right? Perhaps the worms were not only worms. They were our guardian angels. Suddenly things were very dark. The darkest darkness to ever be dark perhaps. Or maybe not. What's that noise? Is the neighbour mowing his lawn or is the very ground disintegrating, taking no prisoners, leaving no survivors? Something was bad... very bad... But that music... so soothing... How could anything be wrong?

As Steven and Kyle began to come down, they started to feel something was bad. Very very bad indeed. They looked to William, who was blacked out, foaming at the mouth. Steven jumped to his feet, "Shit shit SHIT!" he shouted. Kyle jumped up and grabbed his keys. "We need to get him to a hospital," he urged. Steven nodded and began to drag their unconscious friend out of the room and to the car. Kyle grabbed to box carrying the Xotl and rushed downstairs. They got William into the car and sped off to the nearest hospital.

Kyle pulled up in front of Caring Arms Hospital fifteen minutes later. "Okay now shove him out!" he shouted at Steven.

"No way dude! He's our friend!" Steven protested.

"Fine stay here and get arrested." Kyle revved the engine to make a point. Steven sighed, got out, and dragged William to the front doors. He shouted loudly, "This guy needs medical attention right now!" through the double doors, then ran back to the car. They sped off to a nearby convenience store, where they collected their thoughts.

"He's gonna be fine... He'll be fine," Steven muttered to himself. Kyle grabbed the box and tossed it out the window, the purple xotl flopping out and onto the sidewalk. "Let's go home. We'll check the hospital in the morning and see if Will is okay." They sped off, leaving the confused amphibian alone and afraid.

Not too long after, a small goth girl walked out of the store carrying an iced coffee and a bag of snacks. The xotl looked at her and croaked loudly. She looked around for the source of the noise. Her eyes fell to the small purple... thing. "Hey there little guy," she crouched down and held out her palm. The xotl nervously hopped toward her. "Hey there," she said softly, "come on now. I won't hurt you." The xotl decided this human was a friend. He gladly hopped into her hand. She stood back up and gently set him on her shoulder. The girl got into her car and set the purple lad on the dashboard. "You sure are cute," She said patting his little head. "I think I'll keep you. How does that sound?" The xotl tilted his head. The girl chuckled, "I'll call you... Hmm... Scrimmy Bingus!" Scrimmy stuck his tongue out in agreement to the name, glad to have found a friend.
