Deep in the caves of Waitomo, New Zealand, live beautiful and delicate creatures, the Arachnocampa luminosa, glow worms, or titiwai to the locals. For thousands of years, the caves and their creatures were a well-kept secret, visited only by the occasional lost soul. Every once in a while one of those visitors would describe the wonders inside the caves, and they would go on an on about the wonders of the glowing creatures, but one in particular would only be spoken of in whispers. For centuries, he was never given the same name twice, but eventually one seemed to stick. It was a bastardization of a mistaken identity, but he became known to those familiar with the caves as Lumino.

Lumino was bigger than a glow worm, much bigger. Accounts vary, but the consensus always fell somewhere between the size of a large pig or a mid-sized boat. Some said he could swim, some said he could fly, or hang upside down from the roof of the caves like a bat, but where they always agreed was on his bright glowing hue, painting the walls with a dazzling display of color that dashed away the darkness.

He was described as an insect, or occasionally as a reptile. One had called him a taniwha, water monster. Another had called him a tarakona, dragon. The truth was neither, but still somewhere in between. He was ancient, thousands of years old, but he never seemed to age. One particularly adventurous tale described him shedding his skin like a snake and emerging even bigger and brighter than before. The story went that Lumino did this every generation or so, and would continue to do so until his mass filled the caves and his inner source of light shone brighter than the moon on dark nights.

Some discoveries, like King Tutankhamen’s tomb in Egypt, are said to be cursed. If anything, catching a glimpse of Lumino is rumored to be quite the opposite, but with a catch. Those who saw him and never returned to the caves of Waitomo were blessed with good fortune and long life, but those who went looking for him a second time found a much crueler fate awaiting them. A few disappeared into the caves never to be seen again. A few others met untimely deaths not long after. One notable explorer sought to capture a photo of Lumino to prove his existence to the world. His camera was found still clutched in his lifeless hands, the film, when developed, was nothing but solid white frames, as if he had photographed pure light.

You can still visit the caves, and see the glow worms, but visitors are warned before entering. If you catch a glimpse of something there, of something that shouldn’t be there, or perhaps shouldn’t exist at all, you’re probably best to put it out of your mind. You may not see him at all, of course, most don’t. But, he’ll probably see you. Don’t worry, he won’t harm you, at least not directly, at least… so long as you leave him alone.
