Diary

My life seems like it has been one unfortunate event after the next. My home changing week to week and the people coming and going as quickly as spring flowers grow and wither. I'm feeling desperate for love.

It's been another year of moving about; I have considered getting a job at retail, just so I can have a place I can return to.

Apparently I'm not emotionally stable enough to work with customers... I'm not really sure how to fix myself...

I made a friend. He studies graphic design, and I love watching him sketch in the lunch room during our breaks. He seems so at peace.

I've decided to learn graphic design in my off-hours at the library. We'll see how it goes...

Ugh, I am horrible at art. And my only friend quit. I cannot do this.

I have some good news: I submitted an entry for a graphic design contest last spring, and it got second place! I cannot explain how amazing it feels to create order out of chaos. I am continuing to work to build up money to study graphic design and took an internship as a designer for our local CASA. It feels go to be able to do something to help others.

Design Principles

#1 You can't create in a vacuum: There are places to look for inspiration that will guarantee that your work looks like everyone else's. Or to look for inspiration aggressively and to think about how to take things that you see in the real world and make your work look unique and fresh and compelling.

#2 A good design should always start with a grid: Find common axes for the most well-designed grid

#3 Negative space is just as important as content: Affects how our audience feels and it affects our relationship with our audience. We can invite our audience in to wreck their attention, lead them within a composition using negative space. Or if we want and we see it sometimes in design, we can make them feel a sense of tension, we can make them feel a sense of movement depending on what we do with our negative space.

#4 Limit to two typefaces: In any one design project, limit yourself to two typefaces and make certain those two typefaces contrast obviously with one another.

#5 Use color with intention: Use color with intention. Don't just guess. Do your homework. Study up before you pick a color.

#6 Design, don't decorate: Take away unnecessary "ink" to focus on your message not clutter it.

#7 Contrast commands attention: Mix elements of different weight or density. Mix elements that are different in form. Mix elements that are different in scale. Mix elements that are different in color or hue.

#8 Use tension to put life and movement into your work: Tension is simply putting movement or life into our work, making it feel as if something is happening.
1) Proximity: Move items closer together.
2) Move items to the edge of the frame. (Touch the edge or go outside! Go big or go home.)
3) Make items out of balance.
4) Tilt elements. (Tilting counter-clockwise looks better in LTR lang) 5) Use of sharp angles.
