The stallion stared at her, its horizontal pupils constricted within glutinous, corpse-pale eyes. This was not the placid, warm stare of the horses Kishori tended in the master's stables, this creature no tame, flat-toothed beast charmed by a scratch on the withers, eager to grow fat on hay. Her body tensed as she stared down death with its hungry gaze and they stood, horse and girl, the tide lapping at their legs, for eternity and a heartbeat.
Shava," she whispered, the word resounded in her bones and she sliced the pad of her finger against the rough edge of the oyster she'd been harvesting. Red dripped into the swirling tide around her ankles and the creatures curled ears pricked forwards. "Fleet-footed hunter. One who stands between worlds. Thrice I name you by my blood and three times I bind you to return to me."
Death was hungry, but so was she.
