They have been out at sea for months, and her crew is beginning to become restless, they need to stretch their legs on some actual lands, and they need supplies for their next adventure. So to port it is, one of the few that allows sailors such as herself and her crew, the townsfolk don't mind as long as they spend their hard earned coin, which no doubt her crew are ready to spend it all at the taverns.
She much prefers it out on the sea, she knows the ocean better than she knows the land. But she has to make stops from time to time for supplies at least, and to let her crew have a break or else she fears a mutiny, they enjoy the sea of course and sailing and the life of a pirate but they also have other needs.
So as supplies get low and their hull fills up with gold and other treasures to sell they make their way inland.
As soon as they land at this seaside town, they secure their boat to port, and the crew begins to unload at the dock. The coin then split among them all. "Don't spend it all at once place you scallywags!" She warns with a hearty laugh.
"Yeah yeah captain, make sure you relax and enjoy yourself for once!" Her second in command teases.
Squawk rolls her eyes. But he might be right. She stands there for a second, she could just stay in her captain's quarters on board her ship to save her money, but before she can climb aboard, a smell stops her in her tracks, it smells of homely herbs and a bit of sweetness.
She spots it then from the corner of her eye, a bakery, a rare sight. She feels the coins in her purse weigh heavily at that moment.
One look can't hurt, she thinks. She begins to make her way over to the little shop, with such an amazing smell.
She pushes the door open gently, a bell rings as she enters the bakery. She is awed by rows of loaves of bread behind the counter, of various sizes and shapes. Underneath the counter, protected by glass, are shelves of pastries and cakes. On the counter itself are other goodies on plates covered by circular glass lids, Squawk's mouth begins to water at the sight of the golden croissants.
"Hello there!" Says a bright and bubbly voice, there carrying a plate of cookies, coming out from the bake, the kitchen presumably. They place the plate to the side, next to the croissants, lifting a dome lid to place on top of the cookies.
They look up at Squawk with a smile, "what can I do for you?" They remind Squawk of sunshine on a bright summer day, she feels such a sense of warmth from them.
"Oh, uh a croissant please" Squawk manages to get out, distracted by the fantastic smells, and the person in front of her.
The baker nods with a smile and goes over to the croissants, lifting the dome lid and using some tiny tongs to grab one and they place it in a tiny paper bag, and walks back over to Squawk, "Is that all?"
Squawk nods "yes thank you," she hands over the coins and their hands' brush, and she can't help but blush at the touch. So silly.
The baker smiles, "thank you" they say.
With one last nod, Squawk leaves the shop, and takes the goodie out of the bag and takes a bite, it's perfect. It's warm and buttery, soft and has a bit of a crunch. Delicious. As she walks and eats, making her way back to her ship she can't help but hum a sea shanty her mother taught her years ago...she has a sense of warmth in her.
Every time she and the crew come back to the port Squawk makes sure to stop at the little bakery, every day there at the seaside town. Sometimes twice a day. She makes conversation with the baker, learns how they inherited the bakery from their father, and how they have never left the town, let alone go out to sea. They swap stories, Squawk telling them of the sites they have seen and the adventures they have had. In exchange the baker tells them about their childhood in the town, growing up and learning how to bake how, and how much they love it, how this bakery is their home, like how the sea and her ship is to Squawks.
Squawk begins to bring back little treasures for their baker, little trinkets to place on windowsills and new spices and flavours for them to use. The baker makes sweets and hardy bread for Squawk to take with her on her voyages out to sea, and a lock of her hair in a pendant, and a photo of the two of them together. "To remind you to come back home to me" is written in cursive on the back of the photo.
"Home" Squawk thinks, yes for once in her life out at sea she yearns for land, to be in the bed with her little baker above her shop. To spend the days with them by her side.
