"Come in," she said loudly enough to be heard from the door. It was a small hut she lived in, little more than a kitchen with a small room with a bed off to one side, and sound tended to carry quite well in the still hours of the night.
The door opened and two children, a boy and a girl, stumbled inside. "Sorry to wake you, miss, it's just that well, we're lost, and I think Mikah hurt himself," the girl said in a quick and worried voice.
"It's alright, let me see him. Bring him closer to the fire." Elowe said, moving bundles of herbs and food to make room for them. The fire that burned on her hearth day and night was burning low, and Eloww stirred the embers and added another log to add a little more light and warmth to the place.
"It's just a scratch," the boy called Mikah replied, but as soon as Elowe got a good look at the wound in question, she could see it was a gash, likely made by an animal's claws, and much deeper than just a scratch in places.
"What happened?" Elowe asked them. She lit candles for more light.
"We were just playing," the boy began, but the girl interrupted.
"We ran away. It was foolish, and we shouldn't have done it. Now I just want to go home."
Elowe put a pot of water on the fire to boil. She was going to need to clean the wound. "Did an animal do this?"
"Yes," Mikah said solemnly.
"No," the girl corrected him, "Not an animal. A monster. A great big brown thing, the likes of which I've never seen before, nor ever heard of."
"Did it have rounded, small ears? And great big paws about yea big?" Elowe held her own paws apart to show what size she meant.
The children nodded.
"It was a bear." The water came to a boil so Elowe pulled it off the fire and set some clean cloth in to soak. She found some thread and a needle and dipped them both in the water as well. She continued talking as she worked. "They live in these woods, just as I do. But they are not a friend. As you clearly found out for yourselves."
"Are you a friend?" the girl asked suddenly, looking Elowe in the eye.
Elowe laughed. "I'm going to sew up your friend's leg and treat it so that it does not get infected. You won't get such an offer from the bear. Does that make me a friend?"
The girl seemed to ponder this for a moment, before nodding. "Yes, I think so. I'm Gabriella. This is Mikah."
"I'm Elowe." Elowe began working on Mikah's leg, quickly cleaning it with the cloth and water to get the painful process over as fast as she safely could.
"I've heard stories," Gabriella said, holding Mikah's paw as he winced in pain, "About witches in these woods. I've heard they promise children sweets and then eat them. The children, I mean."
Elowe smiled. She had also heard such stories. "I'm not a witch. And you won't find any sweets in this house." She finished cleaning the boy's leg and prepared the needle and thread to sew him up where the gash was too deep to heal on its own. "Besides, there's barely enough meat between both of you to make a stew."
Gabriella smiled. "You're joking, right?"
Elowe nodded. "Yes. Now hold Mikah's hands very tight, and try not to let him move his leg. I'll be done as quick as I can."
Gabriella did as she was told, and Mikah was very brave and didn't make a sound as Elowe went to work with the needle. He was quite pale by the time she finished, but once she began adding a salve she had made from willow bark, color came back to his face. "There now, that's the worst of it," she said briskly. To Gabriella she added, "Help me get the bedding ready. You two can sleep here by the fire."
Gabriella helped Elowe get blankets and pillows out of the storage trunk in her room, and soon the two were resting by the hearth. Mikah closed his eyes and almost immediately went to sleep, but Gabriella stayed awake and watched as Elowe washed and tidied before going back to bed herself.
"I think you are a witch," Gabriella said after a while. "A good witch. I think there are probably lots of good witches like you out there, it's just that we only hear stories about the bad ones."
Elowe shook her head with a soft smile. "I told you, I'm not a witch."
"If you say so," Gabriella replied. She then turned over and went to sleep.
