It is Friday, March 13th. Six months ago, to the day, was another Friday 13th. It was in September. It was cold on the west coast. Near a harbor, where the rain clouds never part, lived a young cat. In fact, many cats gathered there. Most had homes with humans once, but were abandoned by their families. They remember the soft touches and kind voices. They remember their homes. There are those who still miss their families and wait for them to come back for them. Some wish they could live with people again, but have lost their trust. Others are full of fear or anger. Some of the cats had been born and raised on the street. Every day was a struggle. Nothing came easy. Danger was everywhere. Everything was uncertain.
This young cat was in her first year, and upon a sudden, found herself out in the cold. Her family was gone. She'd never know where they went. She had been left behind. The door to her home was locked. The air inside was silent. The feral cats were wild and scary. But there were other houses nearby. The cat went to all the houses, asking for her family, asking for food, asking for comfort. Sometimes she was given a little food. Sometimes a human would coo and stroke her, wondering aloud the same questions she unintelligibly cried. Most people chased her away. No one took her in. She had no home, but she chose one house, one that smelled vaguely familiar. She would hide on the porch when other cats chased her or when people yelled. This house had a family. Not her family, but they put food out for her. They smelled a little bit like her family. That was enough.
Life outside was hard. Then it got much worse. The young cat was pregnant. When she felt it was time to birth her babies, she went onto the porch of her chosen family's home. But something was wrong. It was too early. Something hurt. Then it got much worse. The young cat cried and cried, but no one would help her. She gave birth to six kittens. It took a long time. Two of them were stillborn. The young cat had lost a lot of blood. She was very weak and sick. Suddenly the family arrived at the house, shocked at the sight. The young cat was in agony. When the humans tried to capture her, she ran away to hide, still bleeding from the inside.
The people didn't look for her. They thought she'd come back. They put the four blind kittens on a towel inside an open box. All night, newborn, still bloody, the babies huddled together tightly for warmth, awaiting their fates. The next morning....
I got a call that was very unusual. Working at a pet store (at THAT time(because nowadays there's a lot more) offering some grooming services, a cat adoption program, and a variety of pet supplies, mostly targeted at dogs and cats), the calls were usually price/product availability/operating hours/grooming/adoption inquiries, and sometimes medical questions. There are also some oddball ones that come up now and then. Sadly, sometimes when somebody wants to rehome an animal, they'll call us. Sometimes if it's a cat, they'll ask us to take it. This was one such phone call. Luckily, we had the luck of working with a devoted rescue team. East County Rescue and Transport was the rescue & foster group who brought the cats into the pet store for public attention and, hopefully, adoption. (We also worked with HAVA (Harbor Association of Volunteers for Animals), another amazing no-kill cat shelter+foster group. Both of these rescues have done amazing work, saving and changing the lives of thousands of cats since they started just a few years ago)
So, when the couple called and told me about four abandoned newborn kittens, I first explained that our store does not take cats, but our rescue sure does. I told them to expect a call within minutes. I called the rescue and explained, and was met with a saddened reply. All the fosters were full. Newborn kittens need round the clock care and no one was available, there just weren't enough people to take care of all the season's kittens. So...duh. I said I'd do it. I'd already signed a foster contract long ago, to permit me to take cats from the store home with me at night. I was approved, and while I called the couple back, the troupes were rallied.
There were four kittens. One was bigger than the rest. He was a grey tabby with a great white splash that got his face, neck, chest, legs and belly, and trailed onto his back. The other three were small. The littlest was a clone of his bigger brother. The other was a tabby, and the last, white with great black patches. They may have been cute. But they were dirty. And cold. The couple obviously didn't know what to do with them, but at least they had good intentions, and had been seeking help for them. With the help of the volunteers from the rescue who showed up (thank goodness, because I also still had to work!) The kittens got warmed up and fed, and their poor butts got cleaned.
What came next, it would take me too long to chronicle in detail. It was an intense, emotional stretch of time, during which Lil' brother and Spots both passed away, and Stripes nearly lost her life as well. Stripes and Big Brother became Calamity Jane and Dillinger after being deemed the Pet Store Gangsters (I was allowed to keep them at work to feed, potty and clean). ...I am having a hard time saying more. This has all been one go and I'm a bit tired. It;s dark out. My time with the kittens has been irreplaceable. Here they are now. Four months old. They would have been neutered and adopted by now if the clinics weren't so backed up. If it weren't for this virus. ...I want them to find good homes. I'm going to miss them. They will have a special place in my heart forever. I hope they are just as sweet and amazing to their future family as they are to me. I wish them to have the best possible lives.
...Many say I should keep them, but how can I? I wish to foster again, and every new child I acquire diminishes my ability to do so... these two especially require constant love! Ah... I do love them. But I'm really getting tired... I'm going to bed. To snuggle with kitties. :3
