My late friend Daniel was...an awesome friend. He had Autism, like me, but slightly lower-functioning. Nevertheless, Dan always tried to see the bright side of life. He went to the same workshop that I did, only he was there a lot longer before I ever arrived. It was around January of last year that I noticed Dan was acting...odd. Dan was normally sleepy after lunch, but now he was falling asleep in the middle of talking, and that wasn't normal for him. I alerted my staff and my boss ASAP, but I was too late: Dan had an advanced form of pneumonia. I wasn't allowed in the hospital to see him, but until the day he passed, I honestly believed he would pull through. Fast forward to March of the same year: It was the day after I got back from Texas after seeing my brother, and when I got back to the workshop, I totally expected Daniel to be there, ready with his usual hug. No Daniel. I looked everywhere, finally going to see my favorite staff, Deidre. I asked where Dan was, and she said "You don't know?" I said "Know what?" Deidre replies with no trace of her usual smile "Dan didn't make it". I asked her to to repeat that, as I was sure I misheard her. She said "Daniel's gone. He didn't make it". I just ran, and the rest of that day is blank. His funeral was devastating on me, because I never got the chance to say good-bye before he passed. I sobbed through the entire funeral, not just for me, but for his family and other friends too. When it my my turn to step up to the casket, I looked at my friend's still, peaceful, form, and in a choked voice I said "Goodbye, Daniel" and then my dad, who came with me, gently guided me out the doors of that room. The first person I saw as I exited was Deidre, and I just threw myself in her arms, sobbing my broken heart out. It took me over 6 months to even start to recover from his passing. If I could tell him anything, I'd tell him thank you for being such a good friend to me. You were one in a billion, Dan, and I'll never forget you. That's a promise.
