Story by Paula!

Varis was the prettiest Lain around. When she was together with her flock, she’d easily draw all attention to herself. She was a bigger than the other birds, her feathers were longer and had an amazing shine, like a layer of gloss covered them whole. And the most importante fator to a Lain – the colors. Ah, Varis’ colors were colorful and bright, tones of blue and green and teal that made her beautiful light blue eyes highlighted.

But Varis wasn’t only her looks for whenever she opened her beak a beautiful song could be heard. Her tones were near to perfection and her voice really did its part in enchanting whoever was listening to her. She was admired and adored by all. But no matter the number of followers she had, their love for Varis would never beat her own love for herself.

One thing is self-love, admiring and caring for yourself. Varis’ was... too much.

She thought so high of herself that she’d look at anyone else from above. She despised anyone that wasn’t her, that didn’t look or sing like she did, for she was perfect and absolutely nobody else could beat her. She was the best! She was the whole show. And she admired her very self so much that she spent most of her days looking at her own reflection, flying above waters.

Until one day Varis came across this very different lake; its water was so clear, she never encountered any body of water that could match that crystal clear lake. It was so far up the mountains and she’d never have thought to go look for such a beautiful mirror so high in the sky, for that day she was just looking for a place away from the flock to sleep her beauty a bit.

Those waters were... brilliant. Gleaming with the sun shining over it; and Varis’ image had never looked so beautiful before, not like that reflection she was staring at in that moment. She was charmed! She was so beautiful, so flawless. Her beak was so delicate she had to take a closer look. Oh, her eyes! A bit closer. More. And then...

Varis woke up suddenly. Her eyes were open wide yet she could not believe what she was seeing. She was underwater, but so deep that she could feel the sand below her feet. Her first reaction was to hold her breath and jump up to be rid of the water and back to the sky – but her body wasn’t as light as before, it was pushing her back to the bottom. There was something wrong.

Her majestic feathers were all linked together by what seemed to be fins connecting them, and that delicate skin was doing the same joining her bird toes. But terror came when she realized her colors were gone. She was now the color of that same sand below her feet, despite some runes and markings glowing in weird drawings across her body. She gasped for air – and she could breathe just fine, gills were vibrating by her neck.

What have I done! I must get away from this cursed place! She could see some shadows cross the sun rays above, probably her Lain flock. She tried to call, and screamed and not even the most beautiful song could be heard. My voice! She was unaware that her sounds couldn’t be heard from the surface. They will come to find me, they have to... or at least she hoped so. Varis wasn’t considering the fact that she never cared for friends her whole life, only herself, and despite the others worshipping her, she never bonded to any. She couldn’t even remember the names or the faces of the other birds from her flock.

Varis must now find a way to the surface and back to her people. She still can't tell if that lake was cursed or if someone cast a spell on her out of spite, but she knows she'll have to go through some big changes in order to break it – even if that meant making friends with the other underwater creatures.
